Summary David Corenswet's Superman pays homage to iconic DC Comics scene through new DC Universe art.

The Superman film featuring Corenswet is set for a 2025 release.

DCU Director and co-CEO James Gunn draws inspiration from famous DC Comics storylines for his unique take on Superman.

David Corenswet's Superman pays homage to one of the most beloved DC Comics scenes of all time through new DC Universe art. DC Studios is busy getting several Chapter 1, "Gods and Monsters," movies and TV shows off the ground as they get ready to launch the new DC Universe. The first film to come out of the franchise will be 2025's Superman, featuring Corenswet as the next live-action take on Krypton's last son.

As Superman is currently in production, Gunn has revealed only one photo of Corenswet in the Superman suit, which received mixed responses. While the DC Universe audience waits to see more of the costume, Dimitrius Paranhos shared artwork of Corenswet's Superman doing a legendary pose from the comic canon wherein the hero tears his shirt to reveal the superhero suit beneath it.

The Superman shirt-rip artwork with Corenswet is meant to serve as an homage to one of Alex Ross's most famous DC Comics works with the Man of Steel. Whether or not DC Studios will do any Superman movie marketing like this that brings to life popular DC art to live-action remains to be seen.

What DC Comics James Gunn Is Using To Inspire His Superman Movie

One of the most famous DC Comics storylines that is a major driving source for Gunn's Superman movie is All-Star Superman, by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely. However, Gunn has made it clear that his Superman film will not be serving as a direct adaptation of the critically acclaimed storyline. When revealing the initial slate for Chapter 1, "Gods and Monsters," and some of the comics that they are looking at, Gunn said, "That doesn't mean we're adapting all these comics, but that the feel, the look, or the tone of them are touchstones for our team."

Without having gone into too much detail about it, Gunn has teased that books like Kingdom Come, and Superman For All Season are also inspiring the larger tone of the film. In Kingdom Come's case, the version of the S-shield on Corenswet's Superman costume is directly from the iconic Mark Waid and Alex Ross storyline. Previous Superman-published work like Whatever Happened To The Man of Tomorrow, Giant Superman Annual, and various issues of Action Comics have been revealed as additional sources of inspiration for the DC Universe film.

It will definitely be interesting to see if Gunn's Superman movie will have any specific nods to the comics that he has mentioned. Based on James Gunn's prior statements, it wouldn't be shocking if there were maybe at least a few panels that are brought to life from page to screen. Hopefully, as Superman finishes production this summer, it won't be too long until the world gets the first trailer for the film.
