1000-lb Sisters centers around the weight loss journeys of Amy Slaton and Tammy Slaton, but their sisters, Misty Wentworth and Amanda Halterman, are there every step of the way. The Slaton sisters and their brother, Chris Combs, grew up together in Shawneetown, Illinois, and always stayed close. They were raised by a single mother and never had a lot of money, so they've been through some tough times. Over the years, the Slatons have gone through their share of ups and downs, but they've always had each other's backs.
The series premiered in 2020 and introduced us to the Slaton family of Kentucky. 31-year-old Amy weighed over 400 pounds, and 32-year-old Tammy weighed 720 pounds. While Misty and Amanda never weighed as much as their famous sisters, they were also overweight. All four sisters, along with their brother, Chris, have gone on extraordinary weight loss journeys throughout the series. The 1000-lb Sisters season 5 stars are not only sisters, they're the best of friends.

Amanda Reacts To Tammy's New Look
She Was Proud Of Her Sister
In May 2023, Amanda posted a TikTok video in which she reacted approvingly to Tammy's new slimmed-down look. After years of struggling to lose weight, Tammy had bariatric surgery and lost 440 pounds over a relatively short time. Tammy received a lot of support from her family, who pushed her to lose weight. Tammy's sisters continued to believe in her long after she had given up on herself. Despite all her many failures, her sisters never stopped encouraging her to change.
Before she lost weight, Tammy was trapped in an unhealthy dynamic with the rest of her family, but especially with her sister, Amy. Tammy's mobility was so limited that she needed her family to do everything for her. Most of the responsibility fell on Amy and her husband, Michael Halterman, who had to cart Tammy around and pick up her medicine, groceries, and everything else she needed. Amy even had to help bathe Tammy. After Amy started her own family, she had less time to devote to her sister, which created even more resentment.
Losing weight has been the best thing to ever happen to Tammy's relationship with all of her siblings because now Tammy can take care of herself.
Amy Worries About Amanda & Misty Before Surgery
A Life-Changing Decision

1000-lb Sisters season 5 features a scene where Misty and Amanda Halterman make a big announcement. They informed their siblings that they intended to undergo weight-loss surgery. “Me and Misty’s been going to see Dr. Smith,” Amanda told Chris. Dr. Eric Smith is the bariatric surgeon who treated both Tammy and Chris. During the discussion, the Slatons expressed their fears about the weight-loss procedure, which can include complications and even death.
Since Tammy, Amy, and Chris have all undergone the surgery, they understand the procedure can be dangerous.
Though this would be Misty's first bariatric surgery, Amanda had already undergone the process once before, in 2014. It's not uncommon for some people to get the surgery twice, but revision weight-loss surgery has a higher risk of complications than the first round. During the gripping 1000-lb Sisters scene, Amy feared for Misty and Amanda’s lives.
“Hearing Amanda and Misty get worked up about the surgery and them not making it out, it’s scary,” Amy said, adding, “One slip and, oop, Amanda’s gone, or, oop, Misty’s gone. I need my sisters.”
Thankfully, Misty and Amanda had surgery in March 2023, and they both made it through with flying colors. Similar to Amy and Tammy, Misty and Amanda have been looking dramatically thinner.

The Fabulous Slaton Sisters

The best thing about Amy and Tammy's incredible weight loss is how much it has boosted their confidence. Though the 1000-lb Sisters stars always had swagger, Amy and Tammy's confidence skyrocketed through the roof once the pounds melted away. In February, Amy and Tammy's friend, Haley Michelle, posted a TikTok in which she struts in slow motion with the fabulous Slaton sisters. The post has over 53.7k likes, and the caption reads, "Confidence looks good on you, im so proud of my girls." In the 14-second clip, all three women are dressed in head-to-toe black.
Amy and Tammy were always best friends, but they've grown even closer since losing weight.
Misty & Amanda Deal With Tammy's Home Invasion
They're Through The Hard Times
After a health scare landed Tammy in a medically induced coma, she checked herself into a weight loss rehabilitation facility. It was her last ditch effort to save her own life. While the 1000-lb Sisters star was away, Amanda and Misty went over to check on her house. When they arrived, the door was slightly open. They went inside to find the place had been robbed, and the thieves had taken everything Tammy owned. Knowing Tammy wouldn't want to hear the news over the phone, her sisters drove several hours to the rehab facility to tell her in person.

Amy and Michael were newlyweds when 1000-lb Sisters premiered. After four years of marriage and two children together, Michael filed for divorce from Amy. The couple's separation came as a big surprise because Michael had been a constant presence on 1000-lb Sisters. He was always by Amy's side and was even a big help to Tammy. The couple always seemed happy, but things changed soon after their two sons, Gage and Glenn Halterman, were born.
Amy and Michael's problems were revealed during 1000-lb Sisters season 5, and Michael filed for divorce from Amy in March 2023. During an episode of 1000-lb Sisters season 5, an exhausted Amy broke down in tears as she explained to her sisters, Tammy and Amanda, that her marriage was over. "I used to be the glue that holds our family together, but now I'm just the used piece of gum," Amy tearfully told her sisters.
It was upsetting for Tammy and Amanda to hear Amy talk that way about herself.
After losing so much weight and being such a loving mother to her sons, Amy's family rightfully believes Amy deserves to feel good about herself. Wanting to cheer Amy up, Amanda brought skincare masks for some self-care. When the going gets tough, the Slaton sisters still find a way to laugh.
