House's Most Surprising Love Story Gave The Show Its Best 2 Episodes
Summary Wilson and Amber's surprising romance was one of the best love stories in "House."
Amber tragically died during the "House" season 4 finale.
The heartbreaking end of Wilson and Amber's relationship led to two of the show's most powerful episodes.
House had quite a few memorable romances throughout its eight seasons, but the one that shocked the audience (and House) the most ultimately led to two of the show's best episodes. The Fox medical drama television series, created by David Shore, premiered in November 2004 and revolved around Hugh Laurie's House — a narcissistic, cynical, and talented doctor, who served as the Head of the Department of Diagnostic Medicine. House and his team of doctors would take on new patients every episode, and it was up to them to diagnose their mysterious illnesses and cure them.
House is available to stream on Peacock, House, or Amazon Prime Video.
Like any other network drama, the Fox show had its fair share of romances over the course of its 177 episodes. Some of the best House couples (no matter how they ended up) were House and Cuddy, Chase and Cameron, Foreman and Thirteen, and more. However, the most delightfully surprising relationship was introduced in the middle of House season 4 and involved House's best friend, Wilson. Even though their romance came to an abrupt and heartbreaking end by the finale, they are still regarded as a top-tier romance in the medical drama.

Wilson & Amber's Relationship In House Came Out Of The Blue
Wilson began dating Dr. Amber Volakis (who House not-so-affectionately nicknamed "Cutthroat B****") in season 4, episode 11, much to House's dismay, given his dislike towards her. Their relationship in House was a shock to the show's protagonist and the audience, as the Fox series never showed the buildup to Wilson and Amber getting together. Instead, House deduced that his best friend had started dating someone at the beginning of episode 11.

Hugh Laurie's House character was itching to learn the woman's identity. Given who House is as a person, though, Wilson was reluctant to tell him who she was, which made him want to know more. House crashed the couple's date at a restaurant during episode 11's final scene and discovered Wilson was dating Amber, one of the former applicants for House's open fellowship positions. Amber was the last doctor cut from the running because House thought her ambition and winning attitude weren't suitable for the position. Nevertheless, Amber's surprise connection with Wilson meant she was sticking around in House season 4.
Wilson & Amber's Relationship Ended In Tragedy In "House's Head"
Amber Died After Being In A Bus Accident
Although Wilson and Amber seemed like an incompatible match at first, as season 4 continued, it became evident why they gravitated toward one another and made sense together. They loved and respected each other, and as one of the most likable House characters, Wilson deserved a healthy and exciting romance. Amber also wasn't afraid to stand up to House, which was necessary for anyone dating Wilson. However, the writers seemingly didn't want to keep Wilson happy for very long as the relationship abruptly ended when Amber died at the end of the House season 4 finale.
House woke up in a foggy state in season 4, episode 15, "House's Head," after surviving a deadly bus accident. Unfortunately, House was also missing parts of his memory from the crash but knew he saw someone else on the bus who needed his help. House eventually remembered that Amber was the person who was with him when the bus crashed and was seriously injured. Episode 16, "Wilson's Heart," picked up where the previous hour left off, with Wilson and House finding Amber at a different hospital, where the doctor explained that she was experiencing tachycardia, but he didn't know why.
"House's Head" and "Wilson's Heart" are two of House's most powerful, memorable, and poignant episodes, which is why Wilson and Amber's love story is one of the show's best and most heartbreaking.
Amber's organs began to fail, and House struggled to recall important details from before the accident that would help diagnose and hopefully save Amber. By the hour's end, House remembered Amber taking a heavy dose of amantadine on the bus to treat the flu. The crash caused acute kidney injury, so, Amber's kidneys were unable to filter out the amantadine, and there was nothing the doctors could do to save her. Amber spent her last moments with Wilson, who held her in his arms as she died, making the season 4 finale one of House's saddest episodes.
