How Dogmeat's Origin Could Lead To A Surprising Creature Appearing In Fallout Season 2

Summary Dogmeat's origin story hints at introduction of cyberdogs in Fallout season 2, tying into Enclave's history of creating powerful animal weapons.

Cyberdogs could be used by the Enclave to track down Dr. Wilzig and Dogmeat, offering formidable foes with various weapon capabilities.

Cyberdogs could serve as both enemies and allies in the upcoming season, leading to potential humorous interactions with the main characters.

Warning: Spoilers for Fallout season 1

Dogmeat's origin story could become the catalyst for an appearance from a surprising creature in Fallout season 2. True to the approach taken by games in the Fallout franchise, Prime Video's series created a new take on the protagonist's classic canine companion, Dogmeat. Early on in the series, it's made clear that the Fallout show's version of Dogmeat came from a lab run by the Enclave.

As the show promptly reveals, people at the Enclave were breeding dogs for scientific purposes. The animals were receiving injections that greatly enhanced their physical capabilities and went through extensive behavioral training. One such dog, the one that was in the care of Dr. Wilzig, became the TV show's incarnation of Dogmeat. With Dr. Wilzig meeting his end not long after his departure from the Enclave, the show appeared to move on from this aspect of the story. However, looking at what happened in Fallout season 1's ending, there's a chance the series will circle back to Dogmeat's backstory and use it to introduce another creature from the world of Fallout.

How Dogmeat's Origin Story Connects To Fallout's Cyberdogs

There Could Have Been Cyberdogs On The Enclave's Base

Close

What was revealed about where Dogmeat came from creates an interesting comparison to one of the creature types that players can encounter while roaming Fallout's apocalypse - the cyberdog. It's known from pre-existing Fallout lore that Dogmeat isn't the first instance of scientists turning dogs into weapons. There's also cyberdogs, creatures equipped with cybernetic enhancements that help them carry out their functions, which often call for them to fill police or military-like roles. Based on Dogmeat's training, it's apparent that the Enclave had similar expectations of these dogs, with the main difference being that they weren't cyborgs.

Cyberdogs made their first appearance in Fallout 2.

Exactly where Dogmeat comes from builds even further on the cyberdog connection. While they're not the only organization to make use of cyberdogs, the Enclave does have a known history of creating them in the past. Since they had plenty of dogs at the facility featured in the series, it's hardly a stretch to suggest that they had a department devoted to building the cyborg animals somewhere in the building. If Fallout season 2 revisits the Enclave facility, one or more of these cyberdogs could make an appearance.

Why Cyberdogs Would Make Perfect Sense For Fallout Season 2

Cyberdogs Could Be Deployed By The Enclave Against The Main Characters

Fallout seemed to leave the Enclave behind after the setup for Dogmeat's role and the cold fusion plotline was complete, but they could easily return to relevance in season 2. It's hard to imagine the Enclave not having any sort of response to Dr. Wilzig escaping with his cold fusion research, and if the wanted posters of him and Dogmeat are any indication, they are indeed taking measures to find him. Those efforts weren't a factor in season 1's story, but could become a major plot point going forward, especially since the activation of the cold fusion could provide them with an obvious destination.

The Enclave getting a bigger role in season 2 than in season 1 does feel likely, and not just because of their interest in cold fusion. Another hint of that is the mystery character in the Fallout season 1 finale's Vault-Tec meeting; the Enclave's history with Vault-Tec points to the show's hidden, nefarious figure being an Enclave representative. What's more, the Enclave are one of the biggest villain groups in Fallout's world and not an organization the franchise would revive lightly. Their return is sure to come up with much bigger ramifications than what happened in season 1.

What Cyberdogs Would Mean For Fallout Season 2

Cyberdogs could fill different roles in season 2

If that's the case, cyberdogs could serve as part of the Enclave's retaliation against Dr. Wilzig's escape. With their abilities, they could make for some formidable foes. The multitude of weapons in their arsenal (which are dependent on the cyberdog model) should give the show several options when it comes to how they're implemented into the action. They could unleash a great deal of havoc via mounted guns on their bodies, sonic barks, and more against Lucy and the others.

Cyberdogs can be enemies and allies. Some, like K-9 (Fallout 2) and Rex (Fallout: New Vegas), can join the player's party.

But since cyberdogs have also been utilized as allies to the protagonist, it's not impossible that one can be repurposed into a hero over the course of Fallout season 2's story. Doing could lend itself well to the show's heavy use of humor, given that cyberdogs like K-9 - in spite of their military backgrounds - have fully developed personalities. They're even capable of making jokes and engaging in humorous conversations with humans. A scene where Lucy, Maximus, or The Ghoul interacts with a cyberdog could yield hilarious moments that match up perfectly with the tone the show has established.
