Star Wars' New TV Show Takes A George Lucas Retcon To The Next Level
Summary The Acolyte will connect to a famous George Lucas retcon.
The show will feature Force-sensitive twins Mae and Osha.
The Acolyte's new sibling pair will offer a fresh take on the Luke and Leia retcon.
Star Wars: The Acolyte, Star Wars' next Disney+ TV show, will connect to one George Lucas retcon in the best way. The Acolyte may be Star Wars' newest show, but it will actually be further in the past than any of Star Wars' movies and TV shows thus far. Set 100 years before Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace in the Star Wars timeline, The Acolyte will explore the High Republic Era, the golden age of the Jedi and the Republic.
Despite The Acolyte's setting in the distant past, though, it will clearly connect to the original Star Wars trilogy. In fact, The Acolyte has a direct connection to one George Lucas retcon that hasn't been reused since Return of the Jedi. However, The Acolyte has one major advantage over the original trilogy, suggesting it will be an improvement to one iconic Star Wars decision.

Luke & Leia Were Always A Retcon, Meaning The Twins Weren't Well Developed

The Acolyte will have Star Wars' very first on-screen twins since Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. Although the teasers and trailers for The Acolyte at first seemed to reveal only one character, Mae, recently, the cast and crew behind the show have confirmed the twist that The Acolyte features twins, Osha and Mae. This is immediately reminiscent of Luke and Leia, Star Wars' first set of twins and arguably the franchise's most iconic characters.
The Acolyte will have Star Wars' very first on-screen twins since Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia.
However, The Acolyte has one key advantage over the Return of the Jedi plot twist that Luke and Leia were really siblings all along; this time, the twin plot twist was planned well in advance. While the retcon that Luke and Leia were twins led to the most beloved sibling pair in Star Wars and made the Star Wars prequel trilogy even better, it can't be denied that the last-minute twist created some complex issues for the franchise.
Namely, Luke and Leia had been very obviously billed as love interests in A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, forming a love triangle with Han Solo. Infamously, the twins also kissed one another directly on the mouth in The Empire Strikes Back, inarguably demonstrating the romantic nature of their relationship. Even without this uncomfortable dynamic with Luke and Leia after they discovered they were siblings, though, this retcon wasn't as well done as it could have been.
Had Luke and Leia secretly being twins been the plan from the beginning, that story could have been developed much more. Instead, most of the story about the two being siblings has come from the movies and TV shows that followed the original trilogy. Sadly, this meant that Luke and Leia had little screen time together after learning they were siblings. Moreover, the implications of two twins being connected in the Force were under-explored.
Star Wars Is Giving Its New Twins A Much Cooler Dynamic

Although few details have been revealed about Star Wars' newest twins, The Acolyte cast and crew have confirmed that the twins are both Force-sensitive and were separated at a young age. As Mae has already been shown in trailers for The Acolyte to be drawn to the dark side of the Force, it seems as though the two may be pulled in different directions, on opposite sides of the Force. This could set up an incredible dynamic, wherein the twins must fight one another. Alternatively, this could become a fascinating representation of balance in the Force.
Yes, Luke and Leia being siblings was a surprising twist, and the two have since become better known for being siblings than for being (initially) love interests, yet even their dynamic can't compare to twins fighting on opposite sides of the Force. In fact, not even the Force Dyad, introduced in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker as the bond connecting Rey and Kylo Ren, is as interesting as this concept. While Kylo Ren and Rey were bonded and had amazing powers through the Dyad, light and dark side characters being mirror images of each other feels brand-new and thrilling.

Star Wars Waited The Perfect Amount Of Time To Use Twins Again

Star Wars certainly ran the risk of over-using twins as a plot twist, but The Acolyte is the perfect time to connect to this massive George Lucas retcon. Return of the Jedi was released more than 40 years ago, and Star Wars has avoided repeating this particular storyline. Now, enough time has passed where it does not feel overdone but rather will be an exciting and notable connection to one of Star Wars' most significant relationships.
Currently, details of The Acolyte remain minimal, as Star Wars prepares for the show's June 4th release. However, what has been revealed, Mae and Osha included, suggests that Star Wars' next TV show is going to be a thrilling addition to the franchise. Indeed, Star Wars: The Acolyte's connection to this one major George Lucas retcon indicates that there are incredible things to come.
