Warning: contains potential spoilers for The Ultimates #1!
Iron Man just received a massive power upgrade, one that makes his previous suits of armor look like training wheels. As one of Marvel’s foremost technological and scientific geniuses, Iron Man has created numerous suits over the years. Some of these suits serve specific purposes, and in a preview for The Ultimates #1, he unveils his greatest achievement yet: time travel, which he is going to use to save the world.
Marvel shared an exclusive first look at The Ultimates #1 with AIPT. The book will be written by Deniz Camp and drawn by Juan Frigeri. The Maker’s Council launches an attack designed to discredit the heroes opposing their agenda. As the preview opens, Iron Lad (the new Ultimate Iron Man) and the Ultimates have escaped six months into the future, thanks to Iron Lad’s newest piece of technology. His teammates are less than enthused, but Iron Lad reassures them: “we have a time machine. We can fix it.”

Iron Man’s suits of armor are some of the technological wonders of the Marvel Universe. From his first gray, bulky suit that debuted in Tales of Suspense #39 to the sleek Extremis armor from the mid-2000s, Iron Man’s armor suits have been his most vital weapon. What is even more impressive are the speciality suits, ones made for traveling in deep space or in the depths of the ocean. However, so far, none of Iron Man’s suits (or technology) is keyed towards time travel. That is, until Iron Lad came along.
In the new Ultimate Universe, the heroes are racing against time to defeat the Maker and his goon squad, or as Iron Lad put it: “we have 18 months to save the world.” The Maker, the original Ultimate Reed Richards, sought a world he could manipulate to his own ends. Arriving at a new world in the multiverse, the Maker begins remaking it in his image, and ensuring that some heroes never received their powers. Howard Stark, Tony’s father, opposed the Maker and imprisoned him. Unfortunately, the Maker will escape in 18 months.

Iron Man is Breaking New Ground In Time Travel Technology
The 616 Iron Man Can Learn A Thing Or Two From His Ultimate Counterpart
With their backs against the wall, the new Ultimates must find a way to defeat the Maker and liberate their world, and time travel might just be the way they do it. The conditions that gave birth to Iron Lad have also forced him to think outside the box, and invent a time travel device. While the 616 Iron Man has invented some fantastic devices in his day, time travel has been a field he has avoided. Now, his Ultimate counterpart has one-upped him, creating a time travel machine that will save the world.
