Nightwing & Batgirl's Daughter Has the Perfect Name to Honor Their Shared Mentor

Nightwing and Batgirl don’t always end up together in every universe, but when they do, they've been shown to hunker down and start their own “Bat-Family.” In one dystopian universe, where it seemed like the villains had finally won, they named their daughter after their shared mentor, revealing that perhaps not all hope was lost. In fact, "Bryce" Grayson inspired them to take a big last stand.

Batman: Last Knight on Earth – written by Scott Snyder, with art by Greg Capullo features a world gone mad, under the thumb of a villain called Omega – features the most prominent daughter that Barbara Gordan and Dick Grayson have produced in a DC Comics timeline. Notably, Bryce is named in honor of their mutual mentor, Bruce Wayne.

Bryce plays a pivotal role in the story, but has not appeared outside of the series' alternate community – despite the fact that her creators picked the perfect name for a legacy DC hero.

Batman: Last Knight on Earth features a world gone mad, under the thumb of a villain called Omega – who was actually a dark version of Bruce Wayne himself. Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon went underground with the resistance, becoming a new Court of Owls, alongside Duke Thomas and Jim Gordon. They also had a daughter, who, despite Omega’s menace, they named after Batman. Bryce Grayson fit into her dystopian environment well, evoking a future punk design, with tattoos, a shaved head, and “resist” written on the side.

The name "Bryce" has popped up in the DC Universe before, as a variation on "Bruce." On Earth-11, Batwoman Bryce Wayne took on Aquawoman in Batman: The Drowned. In the Batman: The Brave and the Bold story "Pygmalion," an amnesiac Batman didn't remember his real name, choosing instead to call himself "Bryce."

While this isn’t the first universe where Nightwing and Batgirl had a child, this is the first where their child was given a name honoring Bruce Wayne. In other timelines, they have had sons – one named James for Barbara's father, and one John for Dick's father – but Batman: Last Knight on Earth makes the smart choice of having them honor their mutual mentor, even if the story places Bruce in an antagonistic role. The juxtaposition is an engaging creative choice for the dystopian thriller take on Batman.

A Batgirl/Nightwing progeny would be the natural anchor for a future generation of heroes in the DC Universe.

Bring Bryce Back

The first issue of the new DC Black Label series The Boy Wonder introduces another version of Dick and Barbara who have a child together. While little is known about the baby, it is indicative of a recurring idea that keeps popping up in DC stories – that the long-simmering romance between the two could finally take its next step, even in the mainstream DC continuity. A Batgirl/Nightwing progeny would be the natural anchor for a future generation of heroes in the DC Universe.

If this happens eventually, DC should strongly consider making their firstborn a version of Bryce Grayson – born under very different circumstances, but still given the perfect name, for the perfect reason. With Nightwing building his own Bat-family, Bryce Grayson would be a great addition to the lineup. The end of Last Knight on Earth is hopeful, with Bryce in her own version of a Batgirl costume. It would be smart for DC to bring her back, not only for her own stories, but for adventures with her parents, Nightwing and Batgirl.

Nightwing Nightwing is the superhero moniker given to various vigilante heroes in the D.C. universe. Nightwing is depicted as a warrior who fights from the shadows, utilizes near-superhuman agility and expert combat skills, and tends to have several tools at their disposal. Though Nightwing began with Kal El/Clark Kent, Nightwing has since been primarily associated with Dick Grayson, a former Robin who grew into the new role.
