Duck Dynasty: Why Mountain Man Talks Like That (& How He's Keeping A (S)low Profile Today)

Summary Mountain Man, a regular on Duck Dynasty, isn't a Robertson family member but has a strong presence on the show as a neighbor and radio host.

He claims that his slow speech is due to a childhood experience in Minnesota, adding a unique charm to his character and radio show-hosting abilities.

Mountain Man continues to attend fan meet-and-greets and sell merchandise on his website, including his own Kabooyah seasoning.

Tim "Mountain Man" Guraedy may not be a member of the Robertson family, but he's certainly a big part of Duck Dynasty, slow diction and all. All the cast members on Duck Dynasty had interesting lives before the show, but Mountain Man continues his side gig throughout the series as a radio host of Z 107.5 Big Z Country. When not speaking into a microphone with his distinctive slow speech pattern, he frequently appeared on Duck Dynasty despite not being related to the Robertsons or even employed by Duck Commander, the company.

Instead, Mountain Man is simply the Robertsons' neighbor, so he shows up often on the show and is the most recurring character on the series who isn't a member of the family or an employee. Mountain Man fits the part, following the wild rules of Duck Dynasty with his long shaggy beard and love of camouflage. Viewers would be forgiven for assuming he was another member of the Robertson clan. He's never the center of attention, but anytime Mountain Man speaks, his drawn-out, slow words are hard to miss.

Tim "Mountain Man" Guraedy speaks with a noticeably slowed-down speech pattern, where each word is carefully expressed. The Duck Dynasty cast often gets frustrated with the easy-going maintenance man/radio host, who waits to get his entire long-winded sentence out before responding to anyone. While attending a Lancaster Barnstormers baseball game in Lancaster, PA, fans of Duck Dynasty met with Mountain Man to ask them their burning questions, including why he speaks so slowly.

For the relatively fast-talking Robertson family, it might sometimes be a headache, but for a radio show host, Mountain Man's attention to pronunciation and elongating words is effective.

Mountain Man responded (via PennLive),

"I tell 'em that um, my daddy said it’s 'cause when I was living in Minnesota. I lived there from the time I was 3 until I was 9 and it got down to 50 below and it froze my vocal chords and they never thawed out. That’s why I talk slow."

It's obviously a tongue-in-cheek response as Mountain Man says that question is the one he gets most frequently, so at this point he's probably having a bit of fun with it. Some people just speak slower than others. For the relatively fast-talking Robertson family, it might sometimes be a headache, but for a radio show host, Mountain Man's attention to pronunciation and elongating words is effective. Mountain Man also put his slow speech pattern to good work with his music career. In 2013, he released a Christmas album, Mountain Man - Slower Than Christmas, available on Amazon.

Mountain Man grew up all over the United States, including in Minnesota, Tennessee, and Indiana.
