Is Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides In Dune: Prophecy? Here's What To Know

Summary Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides will not appear in Dune: Prophecy, focusing instead on the Bene Gesserit origins.

Dune: Prophecy will feature an entirely new cast and explore the dark and mysterious aspects of the Dune universe.

The series will set a clear link between the Harkonnen and the Bene Gesserit, shedding light on the prophecy in the Dune movies.

With Timothée Chalamet being the face of the modern Dune franchise, it's natural to wonder whether he will be featured in the upcoming Dune: Prophecy series. Chalamet has played Paul Atreides in Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part One (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024) and will reprise the role once again for the upcoming Dune 3, which will be based on Frank Herbert's second Dune book, Dune: Messiah. Although Dune: Prophecy is not based on one of Frank Herbert's original works, it will be an adaptation of 2012's "Sisterhood of Dune", which was written by Kevin J. Anderson and Herbert's son, Brian.

The cast of Dune: Prophecy will feature an entirely new set of Dune characters led by Emily Watson, Travis Fimmel, Camilla Beeput, Sarah Lam, Mark Strong, Olivia Williams, Jodhi May, and more. Dune: Prophecy will be a prequel spinoff series that exists in the same universe as Villeneuve's Dune movies and will be set thousands of years before the events of Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two. Similar to Game of Thrones' House of the Dragon spinoff series, Dune: Prophecy will share the same story world and houses as the Dune films but will instead focus intently on the Bene Gesserit as opposed to the rise of Paul.

Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides Is Not In Dune: Prophecy

The series focuses on the Bene Gesserit instead of Paul's rise

Sure, some of the unused footage of Chalamet from Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two could be interwoven into Dune: Prophecy, since he is the franchise's biggest attraction.

Given that Dune: Prophecy takes place 10,000 years before the Paul Atreides narrative, it's a near certainty that Chalamet's iconic character will not be seen in the upcoming Max series. At the very most, Paul could theoretically appear in the form of flashforwards or visions, but seeing as he does not fit into the timeline of the series, it would not make logical sense for him to be featured in a main or supporting capacity. Sure, some of the unused footage of Chalamet from Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two could be interwoven into Dune: Prophecy, since he is the franchise's biggest attraction.

As far as the information that has been made available by Max following the release of its two teaser trailers for Dune: Prophecy, Chalamet will not be featured in the upcoming series. He is not included in the series cast list nor does his character fit into the timeline of Dune: Prophecy. What's more, the price tag of getting Chalamet to make his first guest appearance in a television series since 2012's Homeland is likely too high for the Max series to consider. Chalamet was paid $3 million to star in Dune: Part Two and his stock is continuing to rise as he progresses as one of the best young talents in Hollywood.

Are Any Dune Characters Alive In Dune: Prophecy?

The series takes place 10,000 years before Dune

Close

If there are direct links to be drawn between Dune: Prophecy and the two Dune films, it will not be through Paul but instead Paul's mother, Jessica.

As is the case with Chalamet's Paul, all of the characters in Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two exist 10,000 years after the events of Dune: Prophecy. So unless any of them are secretly thousands of years old, none of the original Dune characters will be featured in Dune: Prophecy. Of course, the closest links that the show will have to the original characters in the movies will be Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) and Reverend Mother Mohiam (Charlotte Rampling), who are both esteemed members of the Bene Gesserit in Villeneuve's movies.

If there are direct links to be drawn between Dune: Prophecy and the two Dune films, it will not be through Paul but instead Paul's mother, Jessica. She was originally required by the Bene Gesserit to bear a daughter instead of a son, who became Paul. The Bene Gesserit's prophecy was for Jessica's daughter to marry Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen in an effort to establish a powerful alliance that would lead to supreme rulership. Instead, Paul defied all expectations and rose to become Emperor by his own means. Dune: Propechy could allude to the origins of this plan but there are still 10,000 years that separate the series from the movie, making it unlikely.

Related Dune: Prophecy's Timeline Can Set Up A Better Post-Dune 3 Future Than The Books As a prequel set centuries before the events of Paul's story, Dune: Prophecy can properly set up a satisfying ending to the core eight-book Dune Saga.

How Does Dune: Prophecy Connect To The Dune Movies?

The Bene Gesserit and Harkonnen will have a big presence

Dune: Prophecy will portray how the Bene Gesserit was initially founded, established, and gained mass influence. Focusing on the Bene Gesserit origins will open up one of the darkest and most mysterious aspects of the Dune universe and could make some parts of the prophecy in Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two easier to understand. It will set a clear link between the Harkonnen and the Bene Gesserit, since two of the series' leads, Emily Watson and Olivia Williams, are Harkonnens as well as the most powerful leaders of the sisterhood. Dune: Prophecy will chronicle how the Bene Gesserit began pulling the intergalactic strings that eventually led to Paul's rise in Dune.
