Pokémon TCG's Most Expensive Card Of 2024 Revealed (& It's Not Charizard)
Summary Charizard is no longer the most expensive Pokémon TCG card - Greninja ex took the crown in 2024.
The rarity of the Top 10 cards means only serious collectors are likely to have them in their collection.
Greninja ex's price is more than double the runner-up, and factors like set age may have contributed to this.
When it comes to expensive cards in the Pokémon Trading Card Game, Charizard usually comes out on top but 2024 has proven unfortunate for the Flying/Fire-Type given that it's been bested by a Water-Type. The annual ranking of Pokémon TCG cards is always an exciting insight into the hobby as players speculate what could take home the lauded title of being the most expensive card, even if it's just to live in the hope of pulling it from a pack. Given the rarity of the Top 10, only the most devout collector is likely to have these in their collection.
According to TCGplayer, the Top 10 Most Expensive Pokémon TCG cards of 2024 are:
10. Iron Crown ex 206/162 - $57.08
9. Explorer's Guidance 147/162 (Regional Promo, STAFF) - $65.54
8. Professor Turo's Scenario 171/182 (Regional Promo, STAFF) - $66.62
7. Eevee 188/167 - $68.32
6. Perrin 220/167 - $75.69
5. Raging Bolt ex - 208/162 - $82.57
4. Mew ex 232/091 - $87.83

2. Charizard ex 234/091 - $117.77
1. Greninja ex 214/167 - $250.94
All the prices listed above were captured at the time of writing so they are liable to fluctuate in the days after publication. Regardless, it's unlikely that Greninja ex will be toppled as 2024's most expensive card any time soon given that its price is more than double the runner-up.

Why Is Greninja ex So Expensive?
It's A Bit Of A Puzzle

Given how uncommon it is for Charizard to be knocked off its number one pedestal, it's no doubt surprising that Greninja ex was the card to do so. As speculated by TCGplayer, there could be several factors contributing to the card's massive price point, most obviously the fact that's from the recent Twilight Masquerade set which is still relatively new. Since there are fewer copies of Greninja ex out in the open, that's likely caused the price spike but as the set ages, it'll probably level out to a more reasonable amount.
To add further complexity to the card's placement, Greninja ex isn't exactly a card that receives a great deal of competitive attention. The community widely agrees that in isolation, Greninja ex could be a great card but because of the existence of Dragapult ex, which offers a better version of practically the same effect, there's no need to run it. One thing that's not debatable is the card art depicting the character's Terastallized form which is simply stunning and could easily be the display piece of an entire deck.
Whether Greninja ex holds on to the coveted crown of the most expensive card in Pokémon TCG remains to be seen. It's very likely that a surprise new release upsets the Top 10 and kicks the Water-Type down the list. Only time, and the launch of Shrouded Fable in August, will tell.
