1047 Games has officially announced Splitgate 2, the highly anticipated sequel to its portal-hopping, free-to-play arena shooter. The first Splitgate game was released in early access in 2019, before seeing a full release in 2021, and a current-gen console release in 2022. In this time, the title amassed 22 million downloads and received praise for its fast-paced, innovative gameplay.

The first cinematic trailer for Splitgate 2 - which was shared on the official YouTube channel for the game - confirmed a 2025 release window and showed more of the aesthetic that players enjoyed from the first game with a vibrant, futuristic arena and the arrival of three unique factions. These factions each feature specific playstyles and loadouts for strategic setups, with some of these tactics being shown off in the footage.

An accompanying press release from 1047 Games confirmed that the scope of Splitgate 2 would also be much larger than its predecessor, as the studio has grown to a worldwide team of more than 150 developers consisting of talent behind iconic FPS titles such as Call of Duty, Overwatch, Halo, and more being involved in its development. The sequel has been developed from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5 with a large variety of arenas, weapons, and modes that should enable players to join the battle at any skill level, whether alone or with friends.

Splitgate 2 Is Available To Wishlist Now

And A Companion App Provides A Better Insight Into The Game's Lore

Unlike the first game, which was released across PC and different consoles over time, Splitgate 2 will launch across PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4 in 2025. It is also available to wishlist now on Steam, Epic Games Store, as well as the PlayStation and Xbox storefronts.

A free companion app is also currently available to download today from the official Splitgate website. This app will let players earn in-game rewards that they can access upon the sequel's launch, as well as a five-part comic book series Splitgate: The Games We Play that provides a further insight into the world's lore, and some of the backstories of the characters features in Splitgate 2's announcement trailer. The first issue of The Games We Play is available now, with further issues releasing monthly.

Considering how popular the original Splitgate was and how its sequel is setting out to provide more of what fans of the original enjoyed but on a much greater scale, players should definitely have plenty to look forward to when Splitgate 2 launches next year. For those who hadn't picked up the original - which 1047 Games ceased active development on in 2022 - the studio also promises that the upcoming sequel serves as the perfect starting point for newcomers.
