PS5 Pro Rumors Point To Release Date Delay But It Makes Total Sense
Summary PlayStation 5 Pro release may be delayed until 2024, disappointing those awaiting an upgrade.
The lack of major upcoming exclusives in 2024 may impact potential PS5 Pro sales, unlike PS4 Pro's launch.
Sony might delay the PS5 Pro release to align with high-profile titles like GTA 6 or Death Stranding 2 in 2025.
For quite some time, rumors of the PlayStation 5 Pro have circulated, with detailed technical specifications suggesting that it would be coming soon, potentially this year. However, this may not be the case, as new reports suggest that its release date may have been delayed and won't be launching in 2024. While this will likely come as a disappointment to those who have held off purchasing the current versions of the console or were looking forward to upgrading, it would make sense considering the wider gaming space for PlayStation.
Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson, who has a solid track record with Sony hardware leaks, previously being the first to reveal the remote-play-based PlayStation Portal handheld, had previously mentioned the upgraded console but, alongside many other leakers, has been quiet about its state in recent months. When discussing the upcoming Gamescom event on X, Henderson was discussing the kind of news coming out of the event with videotechuk and suggested that the PS5 Pro may not be launching in 2024.

Looking back at the release of the PS4 Pro in November 2016, there were several major PlayStation exclusives either launching or on the horizon - pun fully intended, as Horizon Zero Dawn launched mere months after in February 2017 - that could really push players to purchase the upgraded hardware. 2016 to 2018 were very good years for gaming in general, but the PlayStation 4 had many exclusives to give it the edge, with Uncharted 4: A Thief's End having already launching in 2016, the aforementioned Horizon Zero Dawn in 2017, and Marvel's Spider-Man and God of War in 2018.
It also coincided with the launch of PlayStation VR, with one of the major selling points being that those who bought the headset and the newer console would have a smoother experience. This made it the perfect time for Sony to release its PS4 upgrade. Unfortunately, while this year has seen the likes of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Helldivers 2, and Rise of the Ronin, unless Sony has some major surprise reveals at Gamescom, the only real exclusive title that is set to take full advantage of the new hardware this year would be the upcoming Astro Bot, which launches in September 2024, and while it may look fun, that may not be enough to fully push its sales as much as the PS4 Pro's launch.
It's possible that with many high-profile titles coming out next year, Sony might push back its hardware release to capitalize on them. 2025 sees high profile, graphics-heavy multiplatform titles such as GTA 6 and Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, and its exclusive Death Stranding 2, which would certainly make for better companions to the PlayStation 5 Pro's launch, but still have relatively vague release windows. Time will tell, however, as there's still a chance that there could be some surprises in store at Gamescom, which is just over a month away.
