Starfield Companions Are So Much Better Thanks To This "Command" Mod
Summary Tired of your companions' poor AI in Starfield? Try the "Command NPCs" mod to give them orders and make them useful assets in the game.
Bethesda's Starfield companions need work - control them manually with the mod to avoid frustrating behaviors like blocking doorways.
The "Command NPCs" mod enhances Starfield gameplay by allowing players to interact with companions more effectively, with updates on the way.
Starfield players may adore the games' companions but with this fantastic mod, they can become actual assets rather than simply following explorers around the galaxy and firing at anything that looks vaguely threatening. As enjoyable as the game's companions are when it comes to chatting about the cosmos and their own personal aspirations, it's widely accepted that the AI governing their actions leaves a lot to be desired. Whether they're running into a wall or refusing to duck for cover during a firefight, they'd be a lot more effective if they just followed orders.
Fortunately, that's now possible thanks to the excellent "Command NPCs" add-on by Nexus Mods user xtcrefugee. Upon installing the mod, players will now have a "Command" prompt whenever they talk to a Companion: Once selected, any item, space, or creature can be selected to order the NPC in question to interact with it. These commands are contextual, so clicking on a chair will tell the follower to sit down while selecting a piece of open space simply serves as "move here" order. Only one NPC can be commanded at once, so it might be time to pick those favorites.

Starfield's AI Still Needs Some Work
Better To Just Manually Control Those Companions

Continuing the trend established in previous Bethesda games, Starfield's companions have become notorious for their less-than-stellar AI. Having the "Command NPCs" mod installed should help alleviate many of the problems players experience with their companions, especially when it comes to annoying issues like a following blocking a doorway or attacking an enemy without any sense of self-preservation. Similar mods have become almost essential additions to games like Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, so it makes sense that an option would exist for Starfield.
One has to hope that Bethesda is planning to overhaul Starfield's AI at some point given how it weakens large portions of the game. The problem doesn't just apply to Companions and followers, it also plagues enemies who oftentimes also disregard cover in a firefight and instead simply charge toward the player with their weapons drawn. It makes for underwhelming combat and while they're certainly more effective than the bandits in Skyrim, they never truly feel like they pose an actual threat.
The "Command NPCs" mod for Starfield is a fantastic addition to the game so those who prefer traveling the cosmos with a friend in tow should check it out. The add-on is still receiving updates so more content and features will likely be included in future updates. As long as Sam Coe stops standing in every doorway, that's already a major improvement.
