Inside Out 2 has surpassed a major box office record set by The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The latter title, which is an Illumination vehicle based on the popular video game property, became a smash hit as soon as it premiered in April 2023, quickly rising past $1 billion worldwide. The Inside Out 2 box office has been performing similarly since it debuted in June 2024. The Pixar movie is a direct sequel to their Oscar-winning 2015 movie, continuing the adventures of the emotions inside the head of adolescent girl Riley.
Per Collider, Inside Out 2 has made more than $1.361 billion at the worldwide box office as of Tuesday, in the middle of its fifth week in theaters. This means it has outgrossed the global total of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, supplanting it as the No. 2 highest-grossing animated movie of all time behind Frozen II ($1.45 billion). Mario earned this record in June 2023, so it was only able to hold it for a total of 13 and a half months.
