Each year, the PlayStation store holds its annual Summer Sale, and this year there are a few must-play games players can snag for under $20. This is the perfect opportunity for players to check out fan-favorite games like Marvel’s Spider-Man, which they may have skipped when it was still full price. The sale also has some overlooked gems like The Outer Worlds, one of the best open-world space games in recent memory.
PlayStation’s Summer Sale only lasts until July 31, so players who want to grab these titles at a discount will want to do so quickly. 10 Assassin's Creed Odyssey Is A Nice Departure From Previous Titles
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Is More Of An Action RPG Than Previous AC Games
Close
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, like other modern Assassin’s Creed games, is a welcome departure from the original formula for the franchise. This game feels much more like a full-fledged action RPG than the earlier games, where combat was so simple that players typically had to fight bare-handed for it to be challenging or engaging. Though the series still insists on its lackluster framing device, Odyssey’s expansive run time is largely focused on the more interesting story that follows the grandchildren of King Leonidas during the Peloponnesian War.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is an interesting mix of historical fiction with some Greek mythology sprinkled in for good measure. By distancing itself from the typical Assassin’s Creed fare, the game has a much stronger sense of identity, similar to what Ubisoft did with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Players who fell off of the series because they were sick of repetitive guys in hoods hiding in wagons of hay may find that Odyssey reinvigorates their interest in the series. Odyssey is currently being sold at a steep discount for only $11.99 instead of $59.99.

Close
Platform(s) PC , PS4 , PS5 , Xbox One , Xbox Series X , Xbox Series S , Amazon Luna Released September 24, 2021 Developer(s) Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio Publisher(s) Sega
Lost Judgment is a spinoff of the Yakuza series, which focuses on a private detective, Takayuki Yagami. Similar Yakuza games, Lost Judgment has its main story - a murder mystery - with a large amount of side content that players can explore. Some of the most engaging missions in the game are its side missions, which are set in a high school where Takayuki can go undercover. The game includes similar combat to the earlier Yakuza games, as well as some unique gameplay elements like detective work and a skateboarding minigame.
Lost Judgment may be a spinoff, but that doesn’t mean it’s a short game. It offers over 100 hours of gameplay, about a quarter of which will be spent on the main game. Typically, Lost Judgment costs $89.99, but thanks to the Summer Sale players can get it for just $14.99. Players can also get the Digital Ultimate Edition for only $17.99, which includes a few expansion packs and The Kaito Files Story Expansion.

Platform(s) Android , iOS , PC , PS3 , PS4 , Switch , Xbox 360 , Xbox One Released January 30, 2015 Developer(s) Dontnod Entertainment
The Life Is Strange Remastered Collection includes remastered versions of both the original Life is Strange and its prequel, Life is Strange: Before the Storm. The original game focuses on high school student Max Caulfield, who returns to her hometown for her final year before graduation. After seeing a vision of the town being destroyed and her friend Chloe being killed, Max discovers she can rewind time and change things. The game is largely a visual novel where the player makes different choices to affect the story. Before the Storm takes place two years earlier and follows Chloe.
Its unique take on the interactive story genre made Life Is Strange a big hit when it first came out. It spawned a series which is still ongoing, the next installment is set to be released on October 29, 2024. Players who want to catch up on the series can get the Remastered Collection 50% off during the Summer Sale for $19.99.
7 Grand Theft Auto V Still Has A Surprising Amount Of Players Online
Close
Platform(s) PS5 , PS4 , PS3 , Xbox Series X , Xbox Series S , Xbox One , Xbox 360 , PC Released September 17, 2013 Developer(s) Rockstar North
The base game of Grand Theft Auto V may be ancient at this point, but it doesn’t really show its age too much. GTA’s style and occasional cartoon physics/logic don’t require the latest and most realistic graphics, and there is still a lot to enjoy for players who have never played the game. Aside from the base game, Grand Theft Auto V also comes with GTA Online.
GTA Online still has a surprisingly big community for how long the game has been out. Though the base game is nearly 11 years old, GTA Online still receives consistent updates to keep the experience fresh. Typically, players who want Grand Theft Auto V’s story mode and GTA Online would need to pay $39.99, but during the Summer Sale, players can get both for only $19.99. This could be a good way for GTA fans to kill time while they wait another year for Grand Theft Auto 6.
6 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Is A Massive RPG For A Low Price
The Witcher 3: WIld Hunt Has Over 100 Hours Of Gameplay
Close
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is still among the best action RPGs. It has a massive and beautiful open world, an engaging story, and fun combat with unique mechanics for hunting monsters. Any fans who have become disenchanted with Netflix’s version of The Witcher due to Henry Cavill’s departure may want to give the game a try instead. Now is the perfect time, since the game’s Complete Edition is on sale from $49.99 for only $12.49.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition comes with the base game, as well as the two major story expansions: Blood and Wine, and Hearts of Stone. The original game already provides players with over 100 hours of quests, and the two DLCs add approximately 25 hours of new content on top of that. At such a steep discount, players are essentially paying about $0.10 per hour of gameplay, which is a very good deal.

Open-world games are a long-standing tradition for Spider-Man, but the older titles often struggled to have engaging combat. Marvel’s Spider-Man completely reinvigorated the franchise when it came out in 2018, giving players some of the best open-world web-swinging and a new revamped style of combat that borrowed elements from the popular Batman: Arkham series. The game also includes plenty of iconic Spider-Man villains - like Electro and Vulture - while giving fans a new take on the Spider-Man story. The game also has two excellent sequels, which players will miss some important context if they skip the first game.
The version of Marvel’s Spider-Man that is currently under $20 is the PS4 Game of the Year edition. While it is a slight downgrade in terms of graphics from the remastered PS5 version, it’s also $10 cheaper and comes with all of the DLC. Some players also prefer the character model for Peter Parker in the PS4 version to the remaster.
4 Mass Effect: Legendary Edition Is The Perfect Way To Revisit The Series
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition Includes The Entire Original Trilogy
Close
With 12 years of separation from the backlash to Mass Effect 3’s ending, it’s easy to now see the Mass Effect trilogy for what it really is: a crowning achievement for RPG storytelling that simply fumbled the ending. Still, if players are willing to focus on the journey as opposed to the destination, there is a lot to love about BioWare’s sci-fi epic. In 2021, all three original games were released together in the Mass Effect Legendary Edition, which is currently on sale in the PlayStation store for only $8.99.
Though the series has some flaws, none of them are so big that one wouldn’t overlook them in a $9 game. Any RPG fans who missed out on the trilogy when it originally came out should definitely check out the Legendary Edition while it is so affordable. Fans of the series who want to revisit it may also want to pick it up, as Mass Effect Legendary Edition makes some much-needed gameplay updates to Mass Effect, making it the definitive experience.
3 The Outer Worlds Is An Underrated RPG
The Outer Worlds Is An Open-World RPG By Fallout: New Vegas Developer Obsidian
Close
Platform(s) Switch , Xbox One , PS4 , PC Released October 25, 2019 Developer(s) Obsidian Entertainment Publisher(s) Private Division
Although it was well-reviewed, and it has some die-hard fans, The Outer Worlds still feels like it didn’t get as much love as it deserves. The game was developed by Obsidian, the company behind other stellar RPGs like Fallout: New Vegas and Knights of the Old Republic II. Like Obsidian’s previous titles, The Outer Worlds delivers a deep role-playing experience, this time in a unique space western setting. Players have compared The Outer Worlds favorably to Starfield, as the former gives the player far more agency than the latter.
Typically selling for $29.99 on the PlayStation Store, players can currently get The Outer Worlds for $14.99. With a sequel on the way, players may want to check out the original game to see if they enjoy the setting and style of play that the game offers. The Outer Worlds also has strong anti-capitalist themes, so buying it at a discount seems appropriate.
2 XCOM 2 Collection Has A Lot Of Replay Value
XCOM 2’s Campaign Changes Each Time It Is Played
Close
Platform(s) PS4 , Xbox One , Switch , PC , Android , iOS Released February 5, 2016 Developer(s) Firaxis Games Publisher(s) 2K Games
XCOM 2 is easily one of the best tactical shooters ever made. There is so much variety, from the gear players can outfit their troops with to the types of missions available to the enemies they will face. This keeps XCOM 2 fresh and gives it a lot of replay value. Missions are challenging enough to feel very tense, and the ability to customize soldiers helps players form attachments with them. There is a real sense of loss when a strong fighter is lost on the battlefield, so even with a middling story, players are still fully invested.
The XCOM 2 Collection includes four DLC packs for the game as well as its major expansion War of the Chosen, and it typically sells for $99.99 on the PlayStation Store. However, during the Summer Sale, players can get it for only $9.99. That is one of the steepest discounts in the sale, and for a game that offers hours of entertainment, it is more than worth it.
1 Yakuza: Like A Dragon Is A Great Entry Point To The Series
Like A Dragon Is A Soft Reboot Of The Series
Close
Platform(s) Xbox Series X , Xbox Series S , PS4 , PS5 , PC Released November 10, 2020 Developer(s) Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio Publisher(s) Sega Franchise Yakuza
Yakuza: Like a Dragon made a few major changes to the Yakuza series. It introduced a new protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga, and turned the game’s combat from a beat-em-up action style into a turn-based RPG. Though it runs into the common JRPG problem of occasionally forcing players to farm XP, Like a Dragon more than makes up for its occasional lapses with its sandbox world full of engaging side content. The game is full of the Yakuza series’ wacky sense of humor while also delivering an engaging main story that players are invested in.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon’s sequel, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, was released semi-recently at the start of 2024. Players interested in checking out this new direction for the Yakuza series and want to start at the beginning of Ichiban Kasuga’s story, can grab Like a Dragon for only $11.99 during the Summer Sale. Alternatively, they can get the Legendary Hero Edition, which comes with some additional content for $17.99.
