The Boys season 4 ends with a shocking moment in which Kimiko talks, and here is why she is finally able to speak in the show's closing montage. Throughout The Boys, Kimiko has always been silent, with the show giving varying reasons as to why the anti-Vought supe can't talk. After The Boys season 3 heavily teased the possibility of Kimiko talking, her voice was finally heard properly in season 4, which was one of the finale's most exciting moments. However, The Boys doesn't explicitly explain why Kimiko can talk now, meaning that it'll take some speculation to explain it.
The Boys season 4, episode 8 features a terrifying cliffhanger ending, one that sets up a dark road ahead for The Boys season 5. At the end of the episode, Homelander manages to gain control over the White House while The Boys split up in order to go into hiding. However, Homelander's supe army quickly tracks them down. Various Vought villains from throughout The Boys' four seasons are deputized by Homelander, with each member of The Boys facing a different character as they are beaten and taken into custody by Homelander's soldiers. And yet, as troubling as this moment is, Kimiko speaking offers a rare positive moment.

One moment in the ending montage shows Gen V's Cate and Sam finding Kimiko and Frenchie in a vast forest of shipping containers, with the supes quickly overpowering the two members of The Boys. Frenchie is taken into the back of a government van, with Kimiko verbally crying out for Frenchie. It is implied that Kimiko's love for Frenchie is what has allowed her to finally talk in The Boys season 4 finale, with her fear and concern for Frenchie's safety being what finally broke through her mental block.
Kimiko and Frenchie's relationship has been heavily focused on throughout The Boys season 4, setting the stage for this tragic moment. Frenchie and Colin's The Boys season 4 romance story was the focus of their arcs for the first few episodes, with things taking a turn for the better near the end of the season. Kimiko and Frenchie finally admit their love for each other, with them even kissing in the finale. However, they are split up by Homelander's deputized supes shortly after, ending their relationship until they hopefully reunite in season 5.

The Boys Season 4 Retconned The Reason Kimiko Couldn't Talk
The Original Reason Turned Out To Be Wrong

The Boys season 4 made some interesting changes to Kimiko's backstory, with it retconning the reason that Kimiko can't talk. The Boys season 2 originally explained that Kimiko stopped talking after witnessing the death of her mother at the hands of the Shining Light Liberation Army. Her mother's brutal murder scarred Kimiko for life, with the trauma preventing Kimiko from talking for the rest of her time in The Boys.
The original explanation was speculation from Kimiko's brother.
However, an alternate version of why Kimiko can't talk was revealed in The Boys season 4, with Kimiko explaining the reason herself. As a child, Kimiko was forced to fight against another young girl by the Shining Light. Their overseer explained that whichever girl cried out in pain first would be killed, causing Kimiko's silence to be a life-or-death situation. Although Kimiko ended up winning the fight, the trauma from it caused her to remain silent for the rest of her life, with her not talking again until she cried out for Frenchie in the season 4 finale.

Kimiko Should Talk Fully In The Boys Season 5
The Boys Can't Go Back
Close
Now that The Boys season 4 has broken the barrier of Kimiko speaking, she should talk fully in The Boys season 5. Kimiko has always been one of the most interesting characters in The Boys, and the decision to allow her to fully speak in season 5 would open up so many more paths to develop her character. It would be strange to have her go back to silence after she spoke in the season 4 finale, meaning that The Boys can't put that cat back in the bag.
Having Kimiko talk in The Boys season 5 makes perfect sense based on the character's previous arcs. The Boys season 3 saw Kimiko want to speak so badly that an entire metaphorical musical number took place, while season 4 saw her go to therapy over her verbal struggles. Now that Kimiko has faced her past and taken down the Shining Light Liberation Army, The Boys season 5 should have her continue to overcome her trauma by allowing her to speak once again.
