New 2024 Horror Thriller Led By Bohemian Rhapsody Star Debuts With Near Perfect Score On Rotten Tomatoes

Summary Oddity has received an impressive 98% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics, surpassing higher-profile horror films of 2024.

Despite having a lower-profile cast and director, Oddity has outpaced big-budget horror flicks in critical acclaim.

The strong premise of Oddity, combined with its stellar Rotten Tomatoes score, may lead to success at the box office.

The new 2024 horror film Oddity has made a great Rotten Tomatoes debut. Oddity is a horror-thriller about the fallout of the brutal murder of a woman named Dani in her remote house. The primary suspect is a man from the local mental institution that Dani's husband, Ted, is a doctor at, but years later, Dani's twin sister Darcy comes back to Ted's home, as she suspects that something more sinister is at play surrounding her sister's murder. Oddity was directed by Damian McCarthy and stars a leading cast including Gwilym Lee, Carolyn Bracken, Tadhg Murphy, and Caroline Menton.

Now, the Rotten Tomatoes score for Oddity has been released. At the time of writing, the film holds a near-perfect 98% score among 53 critics. The audience score is far lower thus far, with a 58% approval rating. Both ratings, however, are subject to change, especially with the audience score, as there are fewer than 50 audience ratings thus far.

How Oddity Compares To Other 2024 Horror

Oddity Has Beat Out Higher-Profile Competitors

Oddity's massive critical debut is impressive, especially given how low-profile the film is compared to some other horror films. Oddity is only the second feature from director McCarthy, as he is not yet an established name in horror. The cast has a lower-profile as well, though some actors have been in higher-profile films. Lee, for example, played Brian May in the acclaimed biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, and Bracken acted in the Oscar-nominated Irish film The Quiet Girl in 2022.

Even with this lower-profile cast and director, Oddity's Rotten Tomatoes score has far exceeded higher-budget horror flicks from this year. It outpaced the Blumhouse films Imaginary and Night Swim, for example, which garnered 24% and 20% scores, respectively. Even the highly anticipated prequel The First Omen, which got an 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes, did not match that of Oddity. Oddity's closest competitor in terms of reviews would have to be the arthouse horror film Late Night with the Devil, which came in just below Oddity at a 97% Tomatometer.

Looking at these other 2024 horror titles makes Oddity's critical consensus even more impressive. For a movie that does not otherwise have huge names attached, perhaps the exorbitant critical acclaim will lead it to more box office success than it otherwise would have gotten. Oddity has a strong premise in the twin setup, which could easily lead to a fantastic main performance. The combination of this premise and the strong Rotten Tomatoes score will hopefully lead Oddity to success as it releases in theaters this weekend.
