She-Hulk's Māori-inspired community may tip the scales against the Ultimate Hulk in their showdown.
Ultimate Marvel is back and it’s about to reintroduce an all-new beefed-up version of She-Hulk. Soon to be leading an army of Hulks, Ultimate She-Hulk debuts with a new look and a new set of muscles. When the Ultimates come knocking on her door, they had better be ready for what’s waiting on the other side.
Until now, fans have only gotten a glimpse into She-Hulk’s newest design, set to debut in Ultimates #3 by Deniz Camp, Juan Frigeri and Federico Blee. The official cover of the issue, illustrated by the talented Dike Ruan, sees She-Hulk and Thor face off and are ready for a fight. Unfortunately, Thor is hogging most of the cover, but luckily, a new post on Instagram by variant cover artist InHyuk Lee reveals the gamma-powered hero in full glory.
Ditching green for gray, Ultimate She-Hulk’s debut look suggests she may have an entirely new backstory from her traditional 616 counterpart.

Ultimate Hulk’s Pacifist Cult May Prove to be a Threat
The Ultimates will Need a New Plan to Stop the Hulk
In the freshly new Ultimate Marvel Universe, familiar concepts and characters have experienced a perverse change from both the 616 Universe and the original 1610 Ultimate Universe. After being trapped on Earth-616 following the events of Secret Wars, the Maker has found a way to reforge a new Ultimate Marvel Universe of his own design. Using a time-traveling reality-warping device known as the Immortus Engine, the Maker infiltrates points in Earth-6160’s history to stop the inciting events that would have led to the birth of Marvel’s mightiest heroes.
Ultimate Hulk is a calculated religious zealot who leads a pacifist cult.
What remains is a world controlled by a shadow government called the Council with the Maker as its imperator. After the Maker was trapped inside his capital city alongside Howard Stark and Kang, the void of power has been momentarily filled by the Ultimate Hulk. Unlike the Hulk fans know, Ultimate Hulk is a calculated religious zealot who leads a pacifist cult known as the Children of Eternal Light. The Hulk supposedly believes in inner peace, but has already shown to be a cruel despot who staged a terrorist attack on New York simply to sew distrust in the Ultimates.

Ultimate She-Hulk May be the Perfect Antithesis to the Ultimate Hulk
Jennifer Walters May Bring More Than Brawn to Their Next Fight
While it’s unknown whether She-Hulk will become a hero or a villain, what is known is that she is leading a secret community of Hulks with some real-world inspirations. Jennifer Walters’s outfit is heavily inspired by traditional Māori clothing, which may indicate a closer connection to her community in a way her cousin would never understand. In the real world, the Māori possess a set of core values, the tikanga, that emphasizes the importance of diversity, belongingness, and oneness among other concepts. If She-Hulk’s new society pulls inspiration from Māori culture, she may have the upper hand against the Hulk.
Where Bruce Banner hypocritically capitalizes on the strength of his cult to ascend to power, it is clear that She-Hulk’s community is important enough to hide away from her zealot cousin. A people that prioritizes communal strength and success is a powerful thing that could change the tide of the resistance against the Maker in the new Ultimate Universe; if not, She-Hulk’s formidable physique might just be enough.
Ultimates #3 will be available August 14 from Marvel Comics.
