Iron Fist turns 50 this year, and the shocking end of his anniversary special promises to redefine Danny Rand. Since 1974, Iron Fist has been one of Marvel’s best street-level heroes, and his partnership with Luke Cage is the stuff of comic book legend. As the character approaches his golden anniversary, Iron Fist creators past and present have joined forces for the Iron Fist 50th Anniversary Special.
As reported on Marvel’s website, the Iron Fist 50th Anniversary Special will bring together a wide variety of creators, all of whom left a mark on the character, to tell new stories. Chris Claremont, who penned many of Iron Fist’s early adventures, is returning for a new story, featuring Wolverine, set at the beginning of Danny’s career. Alyssa Wong, who wrote last year’s Iron Fist mini, returns to chronicle a new story for Lin Lie, the current Fist.

Created by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane as a way of cashing in on the kung-fu film craze of the early 1970s, Iron Fist has nevertheless gone on to become a Marvel icon, even making the leap to live-action. After his parents were killed in a plane crash, young Danny Rand went to live in the mythical city of K’un L’un, where he learned the ways of being Iron Fist. Returning to the Western world, Danny fights crime as the Iron Fist, eventually meeting Luke Cage and embarking on one of comics’ greatest partnerships.
The stories in the Iron Fist 50th Anniversary Special run the gamut of the character’s history. The one-shot will feature several stories featuring Danny Rand, at various stages of his career. Fans will see Iron Fist team up with the Daughters of the Dragon and join up with his old friends in the Heroes for Hire. Yet Iron Fist is more than Danny Rand, and the special acknowledges this too, featuring Lin Lie, the current holder of the title. The creators chosen for the special, such as Claremont and Wong, have helped move the character forward.

Danny Rand is now retired, content to let Lin Lie be Iron Fist. Whatever happens to Danny will no doubt draw him out of retirement, forcing him to become Iron Fist once again. Danny Rand has known tragedy throughout his life, and now on his 50th anniversary, his future is about to change.
