Why Sweet Home Season 4 Is Not Happening (Was It Cancelled?)
WARNING: This article contains minor spoilers for Sweet Home season 3.
Summary Sweet Home Season 4 is not happening, with Season 3 as the final season.
Season 3 wraps up all storylines, ending Song Kang's Netflix K-drama.
The show's final season was planned since 2021 when it was renewed for seasons 2 and 3.
Sweet Home season 4 is not happening, but there is a good reason why Song Kang’s Netflix K-drama will not continue. The most popular of the Netflix K-dramas starring Song Kang, Sweet Home premiered in 2020 and became the first Korean series to enter the streamer’s global Top 10. Since then, Netflix has released several original K-dramas, including smash hits like Squid Game and All of Us Are Dead. Despite the massive success of the first season, it took three years for Sweet Home season 2 to premiere. Fortunately, the wait for season 3 was nowhere near as long.
Some of the best K-dramas of all time are classic broadcast shows that ran for only 16 episodes. However, with streaming platforms like Netflix focusing more and more on original content, K-drama web series like Sweet Home have become particularly common. Those tend to run for more than one season and usually have a bigger budget per episode than the average drama. Sweet Home was one of Netflix’s flagship Korean shows for four years, but season 4 will not happen.

Sweet Home is ending with season 3. This has been known since the release of the first poster for Sweet Home’s third chapter, with Netflix referring to it as the “final season.” Sweet Home director Lee Eung-bok, who had been behind the show since season 1, had also described season 3 as the “grand finale.” This is why Sweet Home season 3 feels so definitive and wraps up all the storylines. While it is bittersweet to say goodbye to names like Song Kang’s Hyun-su, Lee Do-hyun’s Eun-hyeok, and Go Min-si’s Eun-yu, season 3 was the right time to end.

Sweet Home’s Final Season Had Been Planned Since 2021
Sweet Home Had Been Renewed For Two More Seasons In 2021
Close
Considering that Sweet Home was renewed for two more seasons in 2021, it is clear that season 3 was planned to be the show’s final in advance. It must be noted that Sweet Home is a K-drama based on a webtoon whose ending matched that of the first season. In other words, if Sweet Home were to follow its source material closely, the series should not have continued after season 1. By continuing Hyun-su’s story past the webtoon, Sweet Home had to introduce new storylines and characters, which is why season 2 looked so different from the first one.
Sweet Home webtoon was written by Kim Carnby and illustrated by Hwang Young-chan.
The Sweet Home webtoon ended with Hyun-soo turning into a giant monster and sacrificing himself to stop Joong-seop as the Green Home was destroyed. This matches how the first season ended. None of Sweet Home season 2’s new characters were from the webtoon, but they turned out to be important additions to the show as seen in season 3. The fact that Sweet Home continued for two more seasons after its successful debut was not surprising, but it is good that the show’s ending had been planned for a while.
