Recruiting Withers is surprisingly easy in the game; he shows up after enough of the first act has been completed.
Withers is arguably the most vital camp follower players can encounter in Baldur's Gate 3, so it's a good thing one dedicated fan managed to create an especially lifelike cosplay of the powerful undead entity. Despite his importance to the story, it's actually shockingly easy to recruit Withers to one's camp; eventually, he'll just show up after enough of the first act has been completed. He's someone worth having around given that he possesses some of the most vital abilities in the entire game, including resurrecting deceased party members.
Posted to Reddit by creator fflewiathan, their incredible cosplay of Withers is taking the Baldur's Gate 3 community by storm thanks to its shocking realism.
The effect, which was achieved with a combination of makeup and editing, is executed so perfectly that many have mistaken it to be a zoomed-in screenshot from the game but the follow-up post wherein fflewiathan reveals how they pulled it off removes any doubt of its authenticity. While a closer look reveals that the gold head and neckpieces are drawn onto the cosplayer's skin, the effect is still uncannily accurate to Wither's in-game appearance.

Who Is Withers In Baldur's Gate 3?
A Very Mysterious Undead

Despite his feeble appearance, Withers is undoubtedly one of the most powerful characters in the entirety of Baldur's Gate 3. Beyond his ability to help players change their class and respec their skills, the fact that he can resurrect dead party members should be enough for most Dungeons & Dragons enthusiasts to question his real nature. Reversing death should be a difficult, complicated procedure so the fact that Withers is able to do it for a relatively cheap price is undoubtedly bizarre.
Baldur's Gate 3 heavily implies that Withers is far more than just a zombie capable of reviving the dead. Several exchanges with fellow camp follower Arabella suggest that he's much more than a corpse and one particular ending to the game sees him having a one-sided discussion with a painting of Myrkul, Bhaal, and Bane. Given some of these hints and the fact that his sarcophagus is located in a temple constructed to honor Jergal, the Lord of the Dead, it implies that Withers is actually a god who's simply trying to guide Tav's adventure.
Withers being Jergal himself does seem like a bit of a stretch given the god's notoriety so it's more possible that he's simply an underling or minion of the Lord of the End of Everything, especially given his role in recruiting hirelings. Whatever the case may be, he's a character worthy of respect which is one of the reasons why fflewiathan's excellent makeup cosplay is so exciting to see. Withers deserves more love, even if his motivations are questionable at best.
