Han Solo's Star Wars Movie Just Got The Ultimate Snub

Han Solo's Star Wars Movie Just Got The Ultimate Snub

Summary Solo: A Star Wars Story's absence from Odeon's rerelease schedule shows theaters are still hesitant to take a chance on the film.

Despite gaining a cult following, Solo's reputation hasn't improved enough for cinema chains to risk a rerelease due to poor box office performance.

The film's turbulent production history and likable aspects have sparked a renewed appreciation, but it may still struggle to secure a theatrical reissue.

Solo: A Star Wars Story has just received the ultimate snub after years of disrespect. Upon Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm, it became clear that the House of Mouse was looking to expand the series via multiple Star Wars movies and TV shows. Beyond the stories of the Star Wars sequels, Disney's first attempts at expanding the franchise came with the release of two anthology movies: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story.

The former focused on the stealing of the Death Star plans and acted as a prequel to A New Hope, while the latter told the origin story of the titular smuggler. Solo: A Star Wars Story was released in May 2018, only five months after the controversial Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and received middling critical reception. Outside of the animated Clone Wars movie, Solo remains the lowest-grossing Star Wars movie at the box office. If this alone was not enough, Star Wars has just provided another snub to the 2018 movie.

Solo Is Completely Missing From Odeon's Star Wars Rerelease

A Star Wars Rerelease In The UK Is Missing One Skywalker Saga Movie

In celebration of the franchise, a cinema chain in the UK announced that each Star Wars film will be rereleased in theaters between August and October 2024, with each showing for a week. Every film in the franchise was listed as part of the rerelease except for Solo: A Star Wars Story. Odeon released a post on Twitter/X, detailing that the Star Wars prequels would show on August 23, August 30, and September 6 respectively. This would be followed by Rogue One on September 13.

However, rather than screen Solo for a week beginning September 20, this date has been allocated to A New Hope. The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and the three Star Wars sequel movies will then be shown in the five subsequent weeks. As evident, only Solo: A Star Wars Story will not be part of Odeon's rerelease, offering the biggest dose of disrespect toward the film since its unspectacular critical reception and poor box office performance.

Solo's Reputation Has Improved, But Sadly Not Enough

Solo's Cult Following Is Not Enough For Theaters To Take A Gamble

Interestingly, Solo: A Star Wars Story's lack of presence on the schedule for the Odeon rerelease proves that the film's period of revisionism is not enough to make theaters gamble. Since its release in 2018, many have come to enjoy Solo upon rewatching the Star Wars movie. The film has many desirable aspects, and it is a miracle it works as well as it does considering its extremely turbulent production.

The chain will naturally be aware of Solo's poor box office performance from six years ago, thus not risking paying to rerelease the film for fear of it flopping once more...

For many reasons, Solo has become somewhat of a cult classic among Star Wars fans. That said, it is clear that the film's reputation has not improved enough for cinema chains to consider rereleasing the film. In Odeon's case, the chain will naturally be aware of Solo's poor box office performance from six years ago, thus not risking paying to rerelease the film for fear of it flopping once more. While Solo: A Star Wars Story's reputation will likely continue to improve in the eyes of Star Wars fans, it remains to be seen if those fans will ever be able to witness it in theaters again in the future.
