I'm Bummed I Missed Twisters In 4DX & Hope It Returns Soon
Summary I missed seeing Twisters in 4DX, but its success bodes well for a potential re-release in this format.
Twisters' record-breaking 4DX box office gives hope for its return in theaters offering unique viewing experiences.
Dead pool & Wolverine has taken over 4DX screens, leaving fans disappointed to miss out on seeing Twisters this way.
Twisters became a hit in 4DX theaters, and I'm now bummed that I've missed my chance to see it in that format. Universal's sequel to Twister starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos is the hit movie of the summer. Twisters' opening weekend box office obliterated projections, setting a new franchise record and propelling the film to new heights of success. This has come as audiences race to theaters to watch Twisters instead of waiting for streaming. It has also helped that the movie has ignited a stronger interest in 4DX.
As a summer blockbuster that demands to be seen on the biggest screen possible, Twisters is a natural movie to draw audiences to theaters for premium formats like IMAX. Interest in unique viewing experiences has even translated to 4DX. I know I looked at theater lists for Twisters in 4DX to see where the nearest place I could go to see the movie in that format after never going to one before. As mine and others' interest piqued, a disappointing development has happened that leaves us without a chance to see Twisters in 4DX currently.
Twisters Is Already Done Playing In 4DX
A New Movie Has Taken The Screens
Unfortunately for me and anyone else still wanting to see Twisters in 4DX, the chance to see it like that has already passed, for now. There are a limited number of 4DX screens and theaters in the world, and they operate like IMAX, where one movie typically has an exclusive right to play in those theaters at any given time. Twisters had a one-week exclusive window for all 4DX screens. The reason for the shorter window is that Deadpool & Wolverine has now taken over all 4DX theaters.
The release of Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine on July 26, 2024 made Twisters lose access to 4DX screens. The short window comes after Despicable Me 4 previously had a two-week window in the format before the Twister sequel came out. Instead of Twisters and Deadpool & Wolverine sharing 4DX showtimes, Universal loses the opportunity to keep offering audiences a chance to see its summer blockbuster this way. That comes despite the fact that the filmmakers and 4DX worked closely together to ensure a great experience.
Twisters' Record-Breaking 4DX Box Office Gives Me Hope It Will Return
4DX Could Use More Of Twisters
Close
While Deadpool & Wolverine is a bigger box office hit overall, Twisters could have a case for a 4DX re-release thanks to its record-breaking run. The movie reportedly made $2.1 million in 4DX during its opening weekend (via Variety). That is only a fraction of the sequel's overall $81 million opening weekend, but it is still enough for Twisters to beat the previous 4DX record holder, The Super Mario Bros. Movie's $1.5 million. That record gives me hope that 4DX will want to bring Twisters back to this format and help entice more people to see the movie this way.
