Shadow & Bone's Cancellation & Potential Future Gets Emotional Response From Star: "We Hear The Love"
Summary Shadow and Bone's two seasons set up a Six of Crows spinoff focusing on what many consider the best characters and story.
However, viewers were disappointed when Netflix canceled both the series and its spinoff, even though Six of Crows had completed scripts.
Still, star Lewis Tan remains optimistic for a revival, reflecting on the show while at SDCC.
Shadow and Bone actor Lewis Tan reflects on the Netflix series' cancellation and the cancellation of a planned spinoff series while at San Diego Comic-Con. After Shadow and Bone season 2, there were plans for a season 3, along with a Six of Crows spinoff series, which had its scripts already completed, and would have adapted the Ice Court Heist from the popular Grishaverse novel written by Leigh Bardugo. Instead, Netflix's cancellation of both series brought a sudden end to the live-action adaptation of the Grishaverse.
In an interview with Screen Rant at SDCC, Tan shared his reaction and the initial struggles he faced following Netflix's decision to cancel Shadow and Bone and the streamer's decision not to move forward with Six of Crows. He expressed his enthusiasm as a fan of the source material, along with optimism that the projects may one day be revived. Tan also revealed that he was able to enjoy a reunion with some of his Shadow and Bone co-stars at SDCC. Check out Tan's comments below:
Well, besides being broke for a few months after it was canceled, but yeah, for me, I'm never one to – if the season ends, and that's the end of the journey, it's sad for me, as well. I know that the Six of Crows is a really great story and book. It's my personal favorite book that I read of the series, and they wrote the scripts for the Six of Crows. So, they had the scripts written and ready to go. [Chuckles] I'm sorry, guys, I know it's really sad. Look, it still could happen. Anything could happen. Hugh Jackman is back as Wolverine, so anything can happen. And, also, the Shadow and Bone fanbase is really strong, and they're really out trying to get it back and I appreciate that. We hear all the love, and it means a lot to us. I was just with Archie and Patty Gibson last night. A little reunion, Shadow and Bone reunion. Yeah, I was sad, I was sad, but I was happy that I got to be part of it.
The Six Of Crows Spinoff Still Needs To Happen

Given all the time spent introducing the Crows and establishing their various relationships, it is disappointing to not see this setup pay off.
While Shadow and Bone featured many compelling characters and storylines, the Crows were always the best part of the series. Kaz Brekker, Inej Ghafa, and Jesper Fahey stole the show in seasons 1 and 2, even though they were not in the original Shadow and Bone novel, and the series found a way to incorporate them into the adaptation. Shadow and Bone also provided the backstory between Nina Zenik and Matthias Helvar's complicated relationship, and introduced Wylan Van Eck in season 2, all of which paved the way for a Six of Crows adaptation.
Given all the time spent introducing the Crows and establishing their various relationships, it is disappointing to not see this setup pay off. Six of Crows and its sequel, Crooked Kingdom, are widely regarded as the best Grishaverse novels. Some elements from these books were loosely adapted into Shadow and Bone seasons 1 and 2, but Six of Crows' thrilling Ice Court Heist had not happened yet and was directly set up in the Shadow and Bone season 2 finale.
It was finally time for the Grishaverse's best story, starring its best characters, to be adapted. Since Netflix is not moving forward with the series, hopefully it can be revived elsewhere, as the scripts are already written, and there is a significant fanbase eager to see the Ice Court Heist brought to life in an episodic format. The Shadow and Bone universe will likely not see a revival any time soon, but as Tan emphasizes, there is always a possibility of a beloved IP making an unexpected comeback.
