Love Lies Bleeding's budget is unknown, making it a challenge to assess its box office performance, but it seems likely to remain a streaming hit in the coming weeks.

Love Lies Bleeding starring Kristen Stewart has become a streaming hit. Directed by Rose Glass, Love Lies Bleeding was released in theaters earlier this year, following Stewart's Lou, a gym manager, as she falls for female bodybuilder Jackie (Katy O'Brian), with the pair then finding themselves wrapped up in organized crime. The action thriller was met with a positive response from critics, and the film currently enjoys a strong 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. After its theatrical run, the movie became available on streaming for the first time on July 19.

New data from Reelgood now reveals that Love Lies Bleeding ranks as the seventh most popular movie on streaming in the U.S. for the week of July 18 – 24. The film, which is available to watch on Max, beats the likes of The Beekeeper, Find Me Falling, and My Spy the Eternal City. Check out the full top 10 list below:

How Was Love Lies Bleeding Received?

The Kristen Stewart Film Was A Critical Success

Close

Love Lies Bleeding was widely praised for the lead performances by Stewart and O'Brian, and the rest of the cast includes talented actors like Ed Harris, Dave Franco, Jena Malone, and Anna Baryshnikov. The movie features a unique, Coen-esque tone, blending violent crime thriller elements with romance, and the Love Lies Bleeding ending is particularly memorable for the big swings it takes. In addition to its impressive 94% critics score, the movie enjoys a respectable 82% audience score.

While Love Lies Bleeding's reviews were positive, its box office performance is harder to gauge. Glass's movie ended its box office run with $12.5 million worldwide, but it's not clear how this compares to the film's budget, as figures haven't been made available. Though Love Lies Bleeding probably wasn't a particularly expensive movie to make, it's possible that $12.5 million wasn't enough to bring the movie to its break even point.

That being said, Love Lies Bleeding does seem like the type of film that will enjoy a strong second life on home viewing platforms, and the most recent streaming data supports this. Though it may not have been a box office hit, VOD and streaming performance could see the film emerge as a success in the long run as more viewers discover it. The strong critical response to Love Lies Bleeding could see it retain a prominent position on Reelgood's charts in the weeks ahead.

Love Lies Bleeding Cements Rose Glass As A Filmmaker To Watch

Saint Maud Marked Glass's Debut Feature

Love Lies Bleeding marks only Glass's second feature film. Though she directed short films like The Silken Strand, Room 55, and Bath Time, the filmmaker was previously best known for writing and directing 2019's Saint Maud. This unsettling horror film, which stars Morfydd Clark, follows a devout nurse who becomes dangerously obsessed with saving the soul of one of her terminally ill patients.

Clark is now best known for her starring role as Galadriel in the cast of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Saint Maud was similarly well-received critically, and currently boasts a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, just shy of Love Lies Bleeding's score. The 2019 film didn't fare quite as well with general audiences and has only a 67% score, but Saint Maud reviews praised the film for its unique premise and chilling atmosphere. The film features elements of body horror, but also plays like a tense psychological thriller, with Maud's own state of mind becoming increasingly fractured as the plot unfolds.

Saint Maud was made on an estimated budget of $2.5 million and ended up making only $1.4 million at the box office, making it a disappointment in this respect, but the quality of both that film and Love Lies Bleeding announces Glass as a truly exciting up-and-coming filmmaker. Even though the films missed the mark for some, Glass clearly has a unique voice and point of view as a writer/director. It's not clear what she will do next, but her small body of work thus far suggests more exciting movies are on the horizon.

What Kristen Stewart Is Doing After Love Lies Bleeding

The Actor Has Three Interesting Projects In The Works

Though Stewart was best known for a long time for her starring role in the Twilight franchise, she's since become a staple of independent, auteur-driven projects. Only months after the release of Love Lies Bleeding, Stewart appeared in Sacremento, a comedy film also starring Michael Cera and Maya Erskine from director Michael Angarano. Though Stewart doesn't have any immediate releases on the horizon, she's attached to star in several interesting projects in various stages of development.

As announced in June, Stewart will play real-life figure Sally Ride in The Challenger, a TV miniseries about the investigation into the Challenger space shuttle disaster. She is also set to appear in Roshbushpruning, a dark satire, alongside Elle Fanning and Josh O'Connor. Finally, Stewart will star opposite Oscar Isaac in Flesh of the Gods, a 1980s-set vampire thriller from Panos Cosmatos, the director of Mandy. Stewart's interest in unique smaller-scale projects, then, clearly isn't waning after Love Lies Bleeding.
