At San Diego Comic-Con, Silo season 2 revealed much more than its release date. A first-look trailer featuring never-before-seen footage gave us a glimpse into the sophomore outing's plot and casting, confirming that none other than Steve Zahn will be playing a character in Silo season 2. Given the actor's memorable stint on HBO's White Lotus, I couldn't be happier with this news, especially when I realized who Zahn's character will most likely be in the upcoming season. Based on Hugh Howey's Silo book trilogy, I think the series was one of 2023's best series.

In Graham Yost's (Justified) sci-fi drama, Rebecca Ferguson (Dune 2) plays engineer Juliette Nichols, who, along with other survivors, lives in a community that exists in an underground silo. Comprised of 144 levels, the titular structure contains more than Silo's cast of characters. The show's dystopian setting holds secrets — those related to both the past and present — and, for me, that's what makes Apple TV+'s sci-fi series compelling. Of course, powerhouse performances certainly help, so the news of Steve Zahn joining Ferguson, Rashida Jones, David Oyelowo, and the rest of the ensemble is incredibly exciting.

Based on the information shared with Screen Rant at SDCC, I have to believe Steve Zahn will be playing the Silo series' Solo. Apple TV+ has been tight-lipped about Zahn's role, but with Silo season 2's release date confirmed, it's only a matter of time until we learn more about the sophomore outing's trajectory. In Silo season 1's ending, Juliette makes it out of her silo. Once she climbs out of the crate that holds her underground bunker, the engineer sees dozens of similar crates, each with its own silo. Obviously, this sets up a thrilling Silo season 2.

In the Silo season 2 footage shared at SDCC, we saw Juliette exploring an abandoned silo. At a certain point, the clip introduces a potentially violent newcomer played by Steve Zahn. Although he isn't introduced by name, Zahn's character has been locked inside a room. Zahn peers out at Juliette, warning her that if she uses the keypad to open the door, he'll kill her. It's a chilling introduction that signals Solo to me. Regardless, there's no denying that Silo season 2 will expand the scope of its world and story.

In the last two sections of Wool, the first book in Howey's Silo trilogy, Juliette meets a man named Solo, who survived an uprising that unfolded decades earlier in Silo 17. Solo informs Juliette that all the silos are connected, allowing her to contact her home bunker, Silo 18. In Shift, we learn more about Solo. Pre-rebellion he was Jimmy Parker, the son of an IT head who manages to survive Silo 1's attack. Afterward, he takes the name Solo. Although Zahn's character is more intense, I think the parallels set him up to be Silo season 2's Solo.

I think Steve Zahn's past performances prove that he's perfect for the adaptation's version of Solo. Given Zahn's more violence-forward introduction in the SDCC clip, it seems like what happens in the Silo books might change a bit for the TV series' narrative. That said, Silo can explore a more morally ambiguous Solo — a jaded survivor who has been isolated for years. I believe his career-best performance in White Lotus season 1, as well as his underrated turn in the thriller A Perfect Getaway, make him a great fit for Silo season 2's take on Solo.
