Williams joined season 3 as a cameraman brought on by Paul Rudd's Ben Glenroy to shoot a documentary about his anticipated stage debut, which is derailed by his murder. Only Murders in the Building season 4 will see Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez's trio of podcast creators investigating a new murder while their previous adventures are turned into a movie in Los Angeles.

While Tobert left for Los Angeles for a new job in season 3's final episode, the cameraman will not cross paths with Charles (Martin), Oliver (Short), or Mabel (Gomez), as revealed by Williams in a recent interview with People. When asked whether the trio's Hollywood experience could lead to Tobert returning, the actor responded simply, stating, "No, I'm not on that show anymore."

He and Mabel had developed some feelings for one another, with Tobert even asking her to join him when he left to work on a new indie feature. While Mabel had a better experience with Tobert compared to her prior relationships, it is clear that she still has more growth ahead.

However, though Williams won't be returning, there is a major Only Murders in the Building season 3 newcomer who will return. Meryl Streep, who joined the series as aspiring actress Loretta and had a brief romance with Oliver, is confirmed to return in season 4. If she and Oliver can reunite again after a complicated season 3 relationship, perhaps Mabel will be inspired to try once more with Tobert, opening the series up for Williams' return beyond the next season.
