Can You Play Fallout: London Without Fallout 4?

Summary Fallout: London mod is now available for download on PC, bringing new factions, quests, and a British twist to the franchise.

This total conversion mod is almost as big as Fallout 4 itself, offering a standalone-like experience, but it can still only be played by those who own the base game.

To play Fallout: London, you need to roll back your copy of Fallout 4 to an older version, which can be done on GOG or Steam copies.

Three years since its initial announcement, Team Folon's massive Fallout 4 conversion mod, Fallout: London, is finally available to download and play on PC following a surprise announcement on July 25. As its name would suggest, Fallout: London moves the post-apocalyptic franchise to England, showing how another part of the world is coping after the bombs fell, featuring an entirely new storyline with new factions and quests, complete with a full voice cast comprised of notable British talent to bring these new characters to life.

Fallout: London has seven factions steeped in British culture, with some notable ones being the British WW1-type soldiers called Tommies, the Knights of Camelot, and the Peaky Blinders-esque Vagabonds.

Fallout: London is practically its own game with all the content that it includes, and in terms of its map, it is almost as big as Fallout 4 itself. Therefore, while fans wait patiently for a new official Fallout title from Bethesda, this is the closest they'll get to major new content, and is something that likely won't show up in the main series any time soon, as Bethesda Executive Producer Todd Howard previously stated that he has no official plans to set future Fallout games outside of the U.S.

Fallout: London Isn't A Standalone Release

It Requires Fallout 4 To Play

Close

Unfortunately, while Fallout: London does seem like practically a new game in terms of its scope and content, and is free to download, it does still require Fallout 4 to play, as it is a mod. Currently, Fallout: London is available on PC via GOG and Steam copies of Fallout 4 that have been rolled back to an older version. This can be done automatically via GOG's custom launcher or by manually downgrading to version 1.10.163.0 on Steam.

It is not playable with copies purchased through the Epic Games Store due to the launcher not supporting update rollbacks, although Team Folon has stated its intent to bring Fallout: London to the "Next Gen" version of Fallout 4 at some point, which will likely work with Epic Games Store. According to the official Fallout: London FAQs, there are no plans to bring it to consoles, however.

Considering Fallout 4 is a nine-year-old title, it is often heavily discounted and can be found in sales, and to celebrate Fallout: London's launch, GOG has Fallout 4: Game of the Year Edition for a major discount for a limited time, which includes the main game and all of its official DLC packs. Therefore, the price of entry for those wanting to jump straight into Fallout: London isn't too high for those who don't already own Fallout 4.
