"I Need Them To Give Me A Call": I Know What You Did Last Summer Legacy Star Expresses Interest In New Movie
Summary Brandy has revealed that she was not aware that an I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel was in the works.
However, the singer-actor has expressed interest in reprising the role of her I Know What You Did Last Summer character Karla.
Brandy's return to the franchise could continue a recent trend of her 1990s work being nostalgically honored.
Brandy has expressed interest in reprising her role in the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer movie. The 1997 movie of the same name kicked off a minor slasher franchise that already includes two sequels and a one-season Prime Video series. The cast of the I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel includes Camila Mendes, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Hauer-King with original stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. in talks to reprise their roles as Julie James and Ray Bronson from the first two movies.
The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Brandy after confirmation of the fact that 1998's I Still Know What You Did Last Summer is officially considered canon in the new movie led to fan demands for the return of her character, Julie's college roommate Karla. The singer-actor revealed that she didn't even know that the project was in the works. However, she expressed her willingness to return, explaining that her character survived her ordeal in the 1998 movie and saying "I need them to give me a call." Read her full quote below:
I didn’t know Sony was putting that together. That’s interesting! I’m not pulling a fast one on you. I did not know that. I need them to give me a call because I survived in that movie! I came out in the end, bloodied up, ready to go. I did not die in that film. Jennifer, Freddie, hit me up.
I Know What You Did Last Summer Could Continue The Brandy Renaissance
2024 Has Seen A Major Brandy Revival
It remains to be seen if Brandy will eventually appear in the new horror movie, which is being helmed by director and co-writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. However, if she does, it will continue a recent pop culture trend where the artist's late 90s catalog has been mined for nostalgic value. This began with the Ariana Grande music video for "The Boy is Mine," which honored the fact that the song title comes from a 1998 single by Brandy and Monica by featuring both artists in a cameo appearance.
The "The Boy is Mine" music video also features You star Penn Badgley as the mayor of a Gotham-esque city.
The music video's June release was followed by Brandy appearing as part of the Descendants: The Rise of Red cast on Disney+ in July. She reprised her role as Cinderella, the character she originally played in the 1997 adaptation of the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical of the same name also starring Whitney Houston, Whoopi Goldberg, and Bernadette Peters. The Descendants franchise is known for featuring the children of iconic Disney heroes and villains, but bringing on Brandy and her Cinderella co-star Paolo Montalban marks the first time that the movies have cast stars who previously portrayed those roles onscreen.
By appearing in the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel, Brandy could add a second 1998 title to her roster of contemporary homages. The fact that she reprised her 1997 Disney role and reunited with Monica for both the "The Boy is Mine" music video and a subsequent remix also shows that she is willing to explore her previous work in a new light. Ultimately, it seems that the only obstacle to Karla appearing in the new movie is producer interest and potential scheduling conflicts.
