Scream 7 Will Follow Sidney Prescott, Neve Campbell Confirms

Summary Neve Campbell says Sidney Prescott will be at the center of Scream 7, taking on a bigger role.

She compares her return to Jamie Lee Curtis' appearances in the recent trilogy of Halloween sequels.

Campbell's return could mark the end of Sidney Prescott in the Scream franchise.

Neve Campell has confirmed that Sidney Prescott will be at the center of Scream 7, following the horror sequel’s dramatic reworking. Originally intended to see the return of Melissa Barrera’s and Jenna Ortega’s Carpenter sisters, plans for the latest entry in the Scream franchise were thrown into disarray when Spyglass Media fired Barrera in November 2023 following social media posts she had made relating to the Israeli-Hamas war. Both Ortega and director Christopher Landon would also come to exit the project, prompting producers to instead focus their attention on luring franchise veteran Neve Campbell back instead.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Campbell allayed fears that her return in Scream 7 would only take the form of a cameo appearance and confirmed that the sequel will instead focus on Sidney’s character. Despite not having seen the final script yet, Campbell likened her return for Scream 7 to Jamie Lee Curtis' appearances in the latest Halloween movies. Check out her comments below:

We are going to follow Sidney. They did pitch the concept to me, and it’s the reason that I jumped on board. I love these movies, they are so much fun to be a part of, I'm so grateful for them, I could never have imagined being a part of a movie that would have lasted this many decades.

While Campbell’s imminent Scream 7 cast return is good news for fans who missed her character in 2023’s Scream VI, the sequel will likely need to work hard to overcome any hesitation that arises from highly publicized behind-the-scenes dramas. Before Barrera was removed from the project, audiences had largely expected the Scream franchise to continue for many more years with Sam and Tara Carpenter firmly established as a new generation of leading characters.

Given that 2022’s Halloween Ends gave Curtis' Laurie Strode a decisive ending, Campbell’s comparison may even hint that Sidney’s time in the Scream franchise may also be coming to an end.

Despite accomplishing the all-too-rare feat of successfully replacing the franchise’s protagonists with younger faces, the Scream franchise now finds itself having to return to its original final girl. Even though Campbell’s return bodes well for Scream 7's potential nostalgic appeal, the question will now be how much longer the movies can continue with Sidney Prescott at their heart. Eventually, Campbell will either need to hand the torch off again or bring the Scream franchise to a definitive end.

Given that 2022’s Halloween Ends gave Curtis' Laurie Strode a decisive ending, Campbell’s comparison may hint that Sidney’s time in the Scream franchise may also be coming to an end. Whether that means she meets her own death, like David Arquette’s Dewey, or somehow puts a halt to the endless procession of Ghostface killers remains to be seen, but Scream 7 may be far more than Campbell’s franchise return. It could also potentially be a way for audiences to say one last goodbye to one of horror’s most iconic final girls.
