Superman has been protecting Metropolis for decades from every threat he can, but now, there's a monster loose in his city, and Superman is entirely unaware of it.

During the events of Power Girl #10 by Leah Williams and Eduardo Pansica, Power Girl's old ship, which she used to escape Krypton, becomes a major threat. The onboard AI of the ship becomes sentient and merges with one of the many animals that Superman keeps in the Fortress of Solitude, this one being a lion. Symbio quickly escaped the Fortress of Solitude and headed to Metropolis, becoming a major threat, especially since neither Power Girl nor Superman are aware of his presence in Metropolis.

Symbio is so dangerous because he can alter his body however he wants, appearing as a normal human being if he chooses. This power makes spotting him nearly impossible, and the most terrifying part is that Superman is entirely unaware that Symbio even exists. This means that Symbio could potentially body-snatch Superman, turning him from a major threat to a world-wide threat in one move. While that's unlikely to happen, as Symbio seems pretty fixated on Power Girl given their shared history, it's far from impossible.

One of the best ways to deal with Superman is to simply avoid him. Other villains have learned this in the past, including the invisible mafia from Brian Michael Bendis' run on Superman doing everything they could to avoid attracting Superman's attention. Likewise, Symbio seems to be keeping a low profile, plotting and gathering power until he's strong enough to take down Power Girl. While Clark Kent would do anything to protect a member of his family, even Superman can't defend against threats he doesn't know exist.
