Deadpool's New Team Officially Resurrects His Most Underrated Era

Summary In an upcoming Venom War tie-in comic, Deadpool assembles a team of monsters to fight zombified symbiotes, marking a return of his "King of Monsters" era.

The squad includes Deadpool's symbiote "daughter" Princess, the symbiote hero Silence, and classic Marvel monsters Man-Thing, and Frankenstein's Monster, with advanced solicits for the issue also teasing a surprise guest star.

With Deadpool: Venom War #2, Wade Wilson embraces his Monster King era, uniting with Marvel monsters in a gruesome battle against a deadly threat.

Deadpool’s role in Marvel’s upcoming Venom War is revealed, as the Merc with the Mouth assembles an all-new team of monsters. Since the extreme alien event will see both zombified symbiotes and symbiotized zombies, a threatening and terrifying group must come together to save the city. Gathering allies to fight the “zombiotes”, Deadpool calls back to an underrated run where he becomes the King of Monsters.

Giuseppe Camuncoli’s cover for Venom War: Deadpool #2 – by Cullen Bunn and Rob Di Salvo – provides the first look at Deadpool’s squad of scary heroes: Wade’s pet symbiote dog-daughter Princess joins him on the team, along with Silence, Man-Thing, and Frankenstein’s Monster.

Venom War: Deadpool #2 (2024) Release Date: October 16, 2024 Writer: Cullen Bunn Artist: Rob Di Salvo Cover Artist: Giuseppe Camuncoli Monsters vs. Zombiotes! Deadpool may be trapped in a city full of zombified symbiotes and symbiotized zombies, but he’s always got old friends to call on when he’s against a wall! He’ll face the madness with monstrous allies like Frankenstein(‘s Monster) and Man-Thing—not to mention Silence, Princess…and another surprise guest star you will NOT see coming!

Since the solicitation also mentions a surprise guest star, it’s worth speculating if the series will feature a character from Deadpool’s tenure as King of Monster Island. That storyline was cut short after the King in Black event, but Wade will finally be back at it with monstrous heroes in another Venom-based event.

Wade will be teaming up with some major fan-favorite characters in his Venom War spin-off.

Kelly Thompson’s 2019-2020 Deadpool series saw the anti-hero kill a Monster King, inheriting his King status and becoming the leader of a creature-infested Monster Island, in the underrated 10-issue run. Deadpool’s status as a leader of monsters is a perfect fit as an oddball hero whose Weapon X experimentation gave him a healing factor that made him almost nonhuman. By Deadpool’s side through much of this run was Marvel’s main monster-hunter, Elsa Bloodstone, and she would be a welcome addition to Deadpool’s new team against the zombiotes.

While the creatures in Deadpool’s Monster King era were more obscure and unknown, Wade will be teaming up with some major fan-favorite characters in his Venom War spin-off. His hyena-like pet Princess is a natural fit for the symbiote-filled event, and the Silence symbiote will make for an interesting team-up with the talkative Merc with the Mouth. The series will also see these characters team up with premier Marvel’s Monsters Unleashed! heroes Man-Thing and the Marvel Universe’s version of Frankenstein’s Monster, strongly rounding out the full line-up.

"Venom War" Will Give Deadpool The Opportunity To Go All Out

No Holding Back

As Wade Wilson unites an eclectic group of symbiotes and Marvel monsters in a massive milestone event, it seems he is ready to embrace his Monster King era once more.

A horde of alien-powered zombies give Deadpool free rein to kill indiscriminately and with as much gratuitous violence as he pleases. However, his expert assassin skills and extreme healing factor seemingly aren’t enough to give the mercenary an upper hand in the war, as he’ll need to assemble the monster team in issue #2. As the Venom War sees father against son when Dylan and Eddie Brock go head-to-head, Deadpool will join the war by fighting alongside his dog "daughter," while making new friends.

As Wade Wilson unites an eclectic group of symbiotes and Marvel monsters in a massive milestone event, it seems he is ready to embrace his Monster King era once more. Since many of the Merc’s adventures have seen him paired with Wolverine this summer, it’ll be interesting to see him interacting with an all-new team of less familiar characters. As the Venom War creates all-new zombie enemies to face off against the biggest superheroes in the universe, Deadpool naturally becomes a leader for Marvel’s misfit monsters.

Venom War: Deadpool #2 (of 3) will be available October 16, 2024 from Marvel Comics.
