MaXXXine: X Trilogy Future Gets Candid Response From Franchise Creator

The article contains major spoilers for MaXXXine.

Summary Ti West confirms MaXXXine as the end of Maxine's stardom journey but hints at a potential fourth movie that departs from the established stories.

Mia Goth is currently working on other horror projects, including Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein and the MCU's Blade reboot.

West and Goth's collaboration may be on hold as they focus on other projects, but a fourth movie in the X franchise could still be in the works.

With MaXXXine concluding a bloody slasher trilogy focused on fame and stardom, franchise creator Ti West addresses whether the series can continue beyond the titular character's journey. The slasher franchise kicked off with 2022's X, following Goth's wannabe movie star Maxine during an adult film shoot turned massacre before 2023's Pearl took viewers back in time to learn of the antagonist's bloody aspirations. In the third installment, the MaXXXine character's career is on the verge of success, but a killer stalking the streets of 1985 Los Angeles threatens to bring her dreams to a brutal end.

With MaXXXine hitting theaters, West opened up to Entertainment Weekly about whether the franchise would continue after the third installment. While West felt certain that MaXXXine marks the end of Maxine's quest for stardom and is eager to rest after committing himself to almost four years of work on the trilogy, the director stated that there is one potential idea he may expand upon, but will be a departure that dedicated viewers may not expect. Check out West's response below:

"I'm fairly confident that this will probably be the end of the Maxine era. I do have one idea that plays into these movies that could maybe happen, but I don't know if it'll be next." "There is a sort of asterisk idea that it could not be the end, but whether that's something I'm doing right away or not, I'm not totally sure yet. I need to at least sleep for a couple days. I'll say that, if there's more to be done in the X franchise, it's certainly not what people are expecting it to be. It's not just picking up again a few years later. It's not something like that. It's different in the way that Pearl was an unexpected departure. It's another unexpected departure."

While MaXXXine may have brought this chapter of West and Goth's collaboration to a close alongside Maxine's story, West's response does hint there may still be room within the world to explore.

While West has a clear schedule, for now, Goth already has two more horror roles. The star is currently filming an undisclosed role in Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of Mary Shelley's influential horror novel Frankenstein. Despite its constant setbacks and shuffles in creative staff behind the scenes, Goth is also expected to star alongside Mahershala Ali in the Marvel Cinematic Universe reboot of Blade.

As such, West's statement may suggest that he and Goth will place their creative partnership on hold for some time as the former rests and the latter stars in other projects. While Goth has been a key player in each of the X trilogy's three acts, both on-screen and behind the scenes, MaXXXine's ending leaves the character free of the ghosts of her past in the form of her involvement in the 1979 massacre and the looming specter of her televangelist father, Earnest (Simon Prast). As such, Maxine has seemingly found her ending and escaped the demons who haunt her.

While MaXXXine may have brought this chapter of West and Goth's collaboration to a close alongside Maxine's story, his response does hint there may still be room within the world to explore. Pearl provided a surprising additional chapter to the trilogy that few may have predicted, yet it is still aligned and parallels Maxine's struggle. As such, there is a possibility that the X franchise will continue based on the few hints from West.

MaXXXine is currently in theaters, and X and Pearl can be streamed on Paramount+.
