Cyberpunk 2077 Multiplayer Is Closer Than Ever Thanks To Dedicated Superfans

Summary Fans create the "CyberMP" mod for a multiplayer Cyberpunk 2077 experience.

Modders convert the single-player experience into multiplayer, similar to GTA Online.

The mod is in the pre-alpha stage but offers a glimpse of what could be.

Cyberpunk 2077 players eager to share their adventures around Night City with friends are in luck because a group of talented fans are making fantastic progress on a major multiplayer mod. Ahead of the game's launch, one of the most anticipated aspects of CD Projekt Red's RPG was the ability to experience it in multiplayer with a system similar to that seen in Grand Theft Auto Online. Unfortunately, that mode was ultimately scrapped so those who were more excited to play Cyberpunk with their fellow mercs had to make a new plan.

Per Wccftech, a team of modders is working on a project called "CyberMP," which allows players to run around Night City with their friends, taking down various gangs and earning that coveted reputation.

The group has actively been posting updates to its YouTube channel and based on the most recent video, the mod itself is making some major strides. Currently in a pre-alpha state, the mod still has many problems that need to be ironed out but the proof of concept is impressive as the footage shows off a group of players battling it on the streets and hijacking cars.

Cyberpunk 2077 Multiplayer Is A Great Idea

The Framework Is Right There!

CyberMP is fantastic in its execution given the sheer amount of effort that has likely gone into converting a single-player experience into one that supports multiple users but it's also a reminder of what players could have officially had. CDPR canceled the development of Cyberpunk 2077's multiplayer mode to fix the game's disastrous launch state but the mod offers a glimpse into a future where it was completed. As mentioned above, it's not hard to imagine a Cyberpunk multiplayer game in the same vein as Grand Theft Auto Online.

Players could create a custom character that's separate from V and run around Night City making a name for themselves while completing various jobs for the pre-established fixers. Content updates could eventually add in massive heists or multi-part quests that require preparation and setup to properly execute. Players could even come together to form their own gangs and vie for dominance alongside the likes of the Voodoo Boys and Maelstrom.

In lieu of an official multiplayer mode, Cyberpunk 2077 players will soon at least be able to explore Night City with their friends thanks to the CyberMP mod. Considering that it's still in the very early stages of development and the team behind the project is both small and unpaid, it may still have to sit in the oven for a while longer. At least there's a better chance of this multiplayer mode actually seeing the light of day.
