Disney Pixel RPG Announced, Inspired By Classic Games Like Final Fantasy
Summary Disney announces a new free-to-play mobile game, Disney Pixel RPG.
Players create custom avatars and explore fantasy worlds inspired by iconic films.
The game will soft launch in Japan with a global release to follow.
Disney is once again dipping its toes into the realm of mobile games as the monolithic company announced a new free-to-play game that stars some of its most iconic characters. Despite pivoting away from video game development over the last decade, a change in priorities has seen Disney begin to prioritize interactive entertainment as it's launched several video games in the last couple of years that have managed to impress audiences. Disney's Dreamlight Valley has undoubtedly been the company's biggest recent game release as the life-simulator featuring beloved heroes and villains instantly found an audience.
Per the game's website, the brand is undoubtedly hoping the same will be true with its latest announcement: Disney Pixel RPG, a free-to-play mobile game that allows players to create their own custom avatar and adventure around a fantasy world inspired by films like The Little Mermaid, Big Hero Six, and Winnie-the-Pooh to name a few. The premise sees all these interconnected worlds under attack by some shadowy menace so players will need to work together with their favorite characters to dispel this evil. The game is currently slated for a soft launch in Japan before releasing worldwide.
What Can Players Expect From Disney RPG?
Friendly Faces And Microtransactions
While there's still very little known about Disney Pixel RPG, the app is visually lifting a great deal from the classic Final Fantasy games as the art design and sprite animation would fit right at home in a classic Square game. Based on the description available on Pixel RPG's site, certain aspects will cost meaning, suggesting it will incorporate microtransactions in some form. It's easy to see these taking the form of new cosmetics for the player's custom character or even entirely new characters and worlds.
Another tip to Final Fantasy can be seen in Pixel RPG's combat system which features a turn-based system that allows a player-controlled party to attack enemies one at a time. There's even an automated system for those who'd prefer to skip over the battles entirely. There's also seemingly some idle-game DNA in the mix as the website states that characters who are left alone will generate valuable resources although it's not clear what these materials are used for.
As for a release date for Disney Pixel RPG, developer GungHo Entertainment has yet to confirm when it's expected to roll out. Pre-registration for players in Japan is currently open but it remains unknown how long the soft launch is planned to last. One can assume that it will at least be available worldwide within the next year.
