One of Superman's Most Powerful Enemies Returns with a Nightmare-Fuel Upgrade

General Zod is out for blood and ready to leave a mark on the DC Universe. But his new 'Legion of Zod' could be in danger after he discovers a terrible threat hidden on his army's ship.

In Kneel Before Zod #6 by Joe Casey and Dan McDaid, Zod has taken control of a prisoner ship and conscripted them into his new army to enact vengeance on the universe. Zod realizes there's a maximum security part of the ship and orders it to be opened, causing a giant, floating eye to escape and wander the ship, annihilating everything it comes into contact with.

Zod encounters the eye and it injures him with a powerful beam of green light. The eye breaks away from Zod and finds the Emerald Empress, who reclaims her power.

The Emerald Empress is Back and Stronger Than Ever

The Emerald Empress is an old-school villain of Superman's who dates back to the Silver Age. Once Sarya of Venegar, this average woman became corrupted by the mysterious floating relic, the Eye of Ekron. On her own, Sarya is just an average woman with no powers to her name. However, when connected to the Eye of Ekron, she becomes incredibly strong and durable. The Eye's origins were explored in the maxiseries 52 which revealed the Eye belonged to an even more powerful being named Ekron and that his eye was the basis for the Green Lanterns' Power Rings.

It's been a while since the Emerald Empress has shown up and it seems like she, or rather, the Eye of Ekron, has only gotten stronger. It's one of the only things held in the prison ship's maximum security wing and when Zod encounters it, it deals him some serious damage. Of course, Zod is still recovering after he was nearly charred to a crisp when he went to get revenge on the Khunds. But the Emerald Empress and the Eye of Ekron appear to be back at full strength and that could spell trouble for Zod's plans.

Can Zod Overcome the Eye of Ekron's Power?

Zod has lost everything and wants to make his enemies pay. But his luck might have just run out. The Emerald Empress was strong enough to defeat Superboy in the past and it seems like the Eye of Ekron is powerful enough to handle Zod as he continues to nurse his injuries. While it's unknown what the Emerald Empress wants, she's not going to be just another member of Zod's army. If Zod's not careful, he's going to have just as much trouble as Superman did the last time he faced the Eye of Ekron.
