Saw Gerrera's earliest rebel history was retconned in Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 1, and three years later, Star Wars is now taking the steps to clarify this famous fighter's backstory. Throughout its three seasons, The Bad Batch has been able to connect to other parts of Star Wars canon and establish new lore, though it has also retconned quite a few things. One of the biggest retcons The Bad Batch ever introduced was Saw Gerrera's backstory, which used to look very different from the way it does now in The Bad Batch season 1.

Previously established in James Luceno's Catalyst novel, published as a companion to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Saw was originally sucked into the criminal underworld for many years before slowly becoming involved in the fledgling rebellion and the extremist cell he created. The Bad Batch, however, makes it clear that Saw was a target of the Galactic Empire straightaway, with Clone Force 99 themselves being sent after him and his men on Onderon. Star Wars is now taking steps to fix this retcon by further exploring Saw's new backstory.

The first book in the newly-announced Star Wars trilogy Reign of the Empire, The Mask of Fear by Alexander Freed, will explore the first year of the Empire's galactic reign through the eyes of several characters, including Saw Gerrera. This places The Mask of Fear directly into The Bad Batch's timeline, particularly seasons 1 and 2, which means it will more than likely intersect with some of the animated TV show's storylines - and potentially even some of its characters. With Saw Gerrera being a prominent character, his earliest rebel history will surely be explored.
