I Just Rewatched The Hills & Realized Audrina Patridge Was Actually The Worst Friend

Summary Audrina Patridge was cast to be on The Hills, which made her relationships with other cast members inauthentic.

While Audrina refused to go against Heidi and Spencer, she never took accountability for her actions or apologized.

Audrina's inability to empathize or form genuine relationships made her the worst friend on The Hills.

The Hills may be long over, but after rewatching the show I realized that Audrina Patridge was the worst friend to Lauren Conrad throughout the years the series was on. The Hills, a spin-off of Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County, followed Lauren after her tumultuous senior year at Laguna Beach High School and a semester-long stint at college in San Francisco. Realizing her true dream of working in fashion, Lauren and her friend Heidi Montag took on the big city with their new LA friend Audrina by their side. Living in the same apartment building, the show was a hit.

As The Hills progressed, the series brought in additional cast members and changed up the storylines for the women at the center. Lauren and Heidi, who began dating her future husband Spencer Pratt between the first two seasons, got into a feud that divided the cast in its entirety. Audrina was friends with both Lauren and Heidi for several seasons, trying not to draw any firm lines for herself in terms of loyalty. While Audrina and Heidi continued on The Hills throughout its run, by the time Lauren left the series, it was clear her friendships there had expired.

Audrina Was Cast To Be On The Show

She Had Inauthentic Relationships

Although Audrina appeared like she was simply a friend coming into the group during the opening moments of The Hills, she was actually cast to be part of the show. It was revealed that The Hills wasn’t always the most authentic of reality TV shows years after the series aired, but Audrina’s casting was one piece of information that seemed apparent from the start. While Audrina was still part of the series in the same way that Lauren and Heidi were, the fact that she was sought out and brought into the friend group made her relationships far more inauthentic.

I believe that while she did ultimately find herself with genuine friendships throughout the cast of The Hills, Audrina wasn’t friends with Lauren or Heidi to start. The original pair were roommates, and while they clashed during the course of the first few seasons, things were different between them than they were with Audrina. Lauren and Heidi’s friendship had been built from a genuine place, but their friendship with Audrina was pushed for the narrative of the show, which made it difficult for them to be authentic with one another. Audrina didn’t seem to be genuine in her friendships with anyone.

Audrina Wasn’t Willing To Go Against Heidi & Spencer

She Knew What They’d Done To Lauren

Within her storyline on The Hills, Audrina was meant to be more of a friend to Lauren at times than she was to Heidi or Spencer. When the drama started brewing for Lauren and Heidi, after Spencer began appearing on the series, Audrina always seemed to be hyping Lauren up in one moment, then talking to Heidi about her in the next. While Audrina wasn’t necessarily involved in the drama directly, she was often the person who was getting info dumped on her so that the audience could understand what was going on.

At the time the leads feud began, The Hills was trying to show the aftermath of a scandal without giving much context. Lauren had claimed that Spencer released stolen sexually explicit material of her and Heidi knew about it, but was denying it entirely. While the root of the drama was more complicated, the stars of The Hills were fighting. As Audrina was positioned to be on Lauren’s side, it seemed odd that she refused to renounce Heidi or Spencer. Rather than completely taking Lauren’s side, she chose to play the middle and get entangled in the drama for seasons.

Audrina Refused To Take Accountability About Anything

She Would Never Admit She’d Done Something Wrong

Throughout The Hills, Audrina refused to take accountability when she did something wrong or hurt someone’s feelings. Though Lauren and Audrina’s relationship wasn’t always the strongest, the pair became friends and roommates as the series progressed. Audrina’s ex-boyfriend, Justin Bobby Brescia, joined the cast and the pair began an on-and-off relationship that created conflict in Audrina’s life. In one of Lauren’s later seasons, Audrina heard a rumor that something happened between Lauren and Justin Bobby, but before confirming that it was true, she berated Lauren verbally. After realizing it was just a rumor, Audrina never felt the need to apologize.

While Audrina had belittled her so-called friend and roommate to the point of outrage and tears, she didn’t feel like she’d done anything wrong where Lauren was concerned. There were other instances of Audrina failing to take accountability for her faults or mistakes, which made her an incredibly difficult person to be around. Without ever really apologizing for her missteps, Audrina couldn’t be considered a good or genuine friend. I feel that Audrina's inability to empathize, take acocuntability, or form genuine relationships with the rest of the cast make her the worst friend The Hills ever saw.
