Leak Confirms Sequel To One Of The Best Open-World Games in 2023
Summary A sequel to Hogwarts Legacy may be in active development, as suggested by a recent job listing by Avalanche Software.
The best-selling game of 2023, Hogwarts Legacy, is rumored to have a sequel in the works despite mixed critical reviews.
Despite controversies surrounding J.K. Rowling, the success of Hogwarts Legacy suggests a sequel is likely in the next few years.
If a recent job listing is to be believed, a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is in active development seemingly confirming rumors that have swirled for months. 2023 proved to be a massive year for video games with titans like Baldur's Gate 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom raking in awards for their innovative systems and immersive designs. Having said that, the year's best-selling game didn't even earn a nomination for Game of the Year but that's not stopping plans for a sequel.
Per Game Rant, a recent job listing posted by Avalanche Software suggests that the development studio is in the process of hiring a Producer for an unknown project. That may not be much to go at first, but it does mention that the applicant should have experience working on open-world RPGs or "action/magical combat games." The emphasis on magical combat is certainly precise and lines up with Hogwarts Legacy leading many to assume that job in question is for a sequel.

Could Hogwarts Legacy Get A Sequel?
It Certainly Seems Likely
Close
Even without the recent job listing, it seems like a fairly safe bet to assume that Hogwarts Legacy will return for a sequel. The Wizarding World RPG managed to be the best-selling game of 2023, selling over 22 million copies which was enough to beat out industry titans like Call of Duty and Madden. With that kind of success, rumors quickly spread that Warner Bros. was pushing for some kind of follow-up with many suggesting that Avalanche was already in the early stages of production on a sequel.
While Hogwarts Legacy proved to be a massive success amongst Harry Potter fans, the game didn't receive the same kind of reception from critics. Many reviews felt that the open-world RPG suffered from bland quest design and generally dull ideas, focusing on delivering a familiar experience that was neither special nor unique to the Wizarding World. The game was also mired by the ongoing controversy surrounding franchise creator J.K. Rowling for her transphobic beliefs.
Despite those negatives, the numbers speak for themselves so fans of the original Hogwarts Legacy can likely expect a sequel to land in the next few years. Of course, since nothing has been formally announced just yet, it's worth taking the above job listing with a grain of salt. The video game industry is a constantly shifting place.
