Star Wars: Richard Ayoade's The Mandalorian Character Explained
Summary Richard Ayoade voices Q9-0, aka Zero, in The Mandalorian, a member of Ranzar Malk's gang.
Zero's legacy goes beyond his demise, with a piece of him incorporated into Din Djarin's armor.
Ayoade briefly returns in season 2, lending his voice to Zero's old vocabulator to aid Frog Lady's translation efforts.
Richard Ayoade made his Star Wars debut in The Mandalorian season 1, episode 6, and he has since returned to the TV show on one other occasion to bring his character to life once again. Perhaps more than any other Star Wars TV show to date, The Mandalorian has introduced big names and well-known faces to the Star Wars galaxy. One of the biggest opportunities for this arrived in The Mandalorian season 1, episode 6 "Chapter 6: The Prisoner," in which Ranzar Malk's gang - a star-studded cast who play a group of mercenaries - is introduced to Star Wars audiences.
Ayoade plays a member of this gang, using his rich experience in the field to breathe life into his character. Ayoade is a British comedian, actor, writer, director, and more who has lent his talents to various different projects over the years. Though mostly known for his work in the comedy genre, Ayoade has transcended and blended various genres in his craft, from writing and directing the comedy-drama Submarine (2010) to currently lending his voice to Krapopolis (2023-Present). His character in The Mandalorian, however, is a unique standout whose Star Wars legacy has carried on some.

Richard Ayoade Voices Q9-0, AKA Zero, In The Mandalorian
Ayoade's Character is a Thorn in Din Djarin's Side

Ayoade plays the voice of Q9-0, known more simply as Zero, in The Mandalorian season 1, episode 6. As a droid, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) is quickly at odds with Zero, given his well-established hatred for their kind. Zero doesn't make this easier for him, as the droid is not only responsible for piloting Din's own Razor Crest, but he also hunts down Grogu inside the ship until Mando comes to the child's rescue. Though he's not directly a part of the action inside the New Republic prison ship, Zero is the key mastermind dictating their moves throughout the job.
How Zero Is Important To The Mandalorian's Story
His Impact Goes Beyond Season 1, Episode 6

While Zero does ultimately meet his fate at Din Djarin's hands in The Mandalorian season 1, episode 6, he has a unique legacy that Mando, ironically, carries with him wherever he goes. After losing his right cuisse (thigh armor) during the battle on Nevarro in The Mandalorian season 1 finale, Din has to get crafty to create a new piece of armor - and he uses a piece of Zero's old body in its place. Din still has this piece of armor in his beskar suit to this day, which means that a piece of Zero quite literally sticks with him all the time.
Ayoade briefly reprised his role as Zero in The Mandalorian season 2, episode 2 "Chapter 10: The Passenger," when Frog Lady used the droid's old vocabulator to translate her language for Din Djarin to understand.
In a more substantial manner, however, Ayoade briefly reprised his role as Zero in The Mandalorian season 2, episode 2 "Chapter 10: The Passenger," when Frog Lady uses the droid's old vocabulator to translate her language for Din Djarin to understand. This method of translation allows Mando to further understand the urgency of Frog Lady's situation, which is what ultimately motivates him to attempt fixing the Razor Crest in Maldo Kreis' freezing cold climate. Ayoade has yet to return again to The Mandalorian, though Zero will always live on in this story.
