A Celebrated Actor Joins The Cast

With the enticing new Bosch spinoff continuing to take shape, the latest news confirms a celebrated actor is joining the Renée Ballard series. Most known for roles in movies like Zodiac and shows like American Horror Story, noted character actor John Carroll Lynch is adding his acting prowess to the fledgling series as Thomas Laffont. The series regular character is a retired homicide detective who uses his free time to assist Renée in her cold case investigations. Lynch joins star Maggie Q as Detective Renée Ballard and Courtney Taylor, who is set to play Samira Parker.

The series will center on Detective Ballard as she attempts to keep the underfunded Cold Case Division of the LAPD running while working with a volunteer force. Many details are still unknown about the spinoff, but Michael Connelly, Michael Alaimo, Kendall Sherwood, and Trish Hofmann are once again serving as producers.

Considering the fact that Maggie Q is set to debut as Detective Ballard in Bosch: Legacy season 3, it stands to reason that the spinoff won't debut until after the conclusion of the upcoming season. This means that the earliest the Renée Ballard series could premiere is 2025, and that is corroborated by the fact that production got underway in July 2024. First and foremost, Mission: Impossible star Maggie Q has been tapped to play the titular role, a dedicated detective from Maui who carries the underfunded and understaffed Cold Case Division of the LAPD. Maggie Q is joined by seasoned character actor John Carroll Lynch (American Horror Story) as retired detective Thomas Laffont who uses his free time to assist Renée in her investigations.
