George Clooney's Ocean's 14 Script Comments Get Surprise Response From Franchise Stars: "You Know More Than I Do"

Summary Matt Damon and Casey Affleck express their surprise at George Clooney's reveal of an Ocean's 14 script being ready, but are open to returning.

Previous trilogy director Steven Soderbergh has already indicated he won't be back for a fourth movie as he felt the franchise was concluded nicely with the third installment.

Despite Soderbergh's absence, now is the perfect time for a fourth movie with the original cast to happen, as Warner Bros. is already developing a prequel, and the continued interest from Clooney, Damon, Affleck and others shows a promising sign of success.

After George Clooney's surprise reveal that a script was ready for the next installment, Matt Damon and Casey Affleck weigh in on a potential Ocean's 14. Clooney, Damon and Affleck were part of the ensemble cast of Steven Soderbergh's trilogy of heist movies, revolving around a group of thieves led by Danny Ocean who pull off a variety of heists around the world, namely in Las Vegas. After its initial conclusion in 2007, the Ocean's franchise returned with the female-led spinoff Ocean's 8 in 2018, which focused on Danny's sister, Sandra Bullock's Debbie, and was a fairly positive critical and commercial success.

During a recent interview with Screen Rant for their Apple TV+ buddy comedy heist movie The Instigators, Matt Damon and Casey Affleck were asked about Clooney's recent revelation of an Ocean's 14 script being ready to go. The duo humorously acknowledged "you know more than I do", though were very interested in making the sequel, expressing their love for working with their co-stars. See what Damon and Affleck said below:

Casey Affleck: No, you know more than I do. [Laughs]

Matt Damon: Yeah. [Laughs] I guess it'll be up to if we can get the whole group together and get a good script. We'll see where it goes, but we haven't heard much at this point. But, we're obviously open to it. We love all those guys in that whole group, and it would be really fun, obviously.

Why Now Is The Right Time For A New Ocean's Movie With The Original Cast

Close

The possibility of an Ocean's 14 has swirled since the last mainline movie's release in 2007, though was initially shelved due to the death of star Bernie Mac. Don Cheadle previously reignited hopes for a new installment in 2021 when he indicated that Soderbergh was at work developing an idea for a fourth movie, though Soderbergh more recently stated in January 2024 that he was not interested in returning to the franchise as he felt it was "very much concluded for me". Despite Soderbergh's absence, though, there are a number of reasons why now is the perfect time for a fourth movie.

Related Ocean's Eleven Prequel: Confirmation & Everything We Know Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie are reuniting for an Ocean's 11 prequel, and there's already plenty to discuss around the upcoming heist movie.

One of the biggest is not only the fact the cast are keen on returning, but that Clooney has a script ready for Ocean's 14. In the world of modern filmmaking, it's rare for a franchise script to be fully ready without a greenlight from the studio, and yet Clooney, who has two Oscar nominations for his screenplays, taking the initiative to write it shows he's passionate about making the sequel. Given Clooney also has yet to break his Rotten streak in the director's chair since 2011's The Ides of March, returning to a world he's intimately familiar with could prove a boon for his redemptive chances.

Clooney has directed five movies since The Ides of March, only two of which netted Fresh scores from Audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

The other major reason why now is the perfect tie for Ocean's 14 to get off the ground is Warner Bros.' continued interest in the franchise. The studio is currently developing a prequel film with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling intended to play Danny and Debbie's parents, and given Ocean's 8 left it a mystery as to whether Danny faked his death, a fourth movie could not only properly pair Bullock and Clooney, but also lay the groundwork for the prequel to explore their characters' parents.
