A new image from Mortal Kombat 2 offers the best glimpse yet at the introduction of a major character from the games. Currently slated for an October 2025 release, filming on the sequel officially wrapped in January this year with several new faces added to the cast. In addition to Karl Urban’s introduction as the first generation fighter Johnny Cage, Mortal Kombat 2’s impressive character roster also includes Jade (Tati Gabrielle), Kitana (Adeline Rudolph), Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford), Queen Sindel (Ana Thu Nguyen), King Jerrod (Desmond Chiam), Quan Chi (Damon Herriman), and Baraka (CJ. Bloomfield).

Taking to Twitter/X, video game franchise co-creator Ed Boon, shared a new photo of Rudolph’s Kitana, with a focus on her iconic razor-edged fan and its intricate detailing. Check it out below:

Princess Kitana Could Be The Key To Mortal Kombat 2’s Depiction of Outworld

2021's Mortal Kombat Only Hinted At The Franchise's Otherworldly Threat

With the events of 2021’s Mortal Kombat reboot only hinting at the threat posed by Outworld, her introduction likely indicates a much greater exploration of the otherworldly realm.

Originally introduced in 1993’s Mortal Kombat II video game, Kitana plays a pivotal role in the franchise’s rich mythology and the story of the hostile realm known as Outworld. Depicted as the adopted daughter of Outworld’s Emperor Shao Kahn, and the biological daughter of the defeated King of Edenia, Jerrod, her character played a crucial role in helping the Earthrealm warriors overcome Kahn’s plans for his continued conquest. With the events of 2021’s Mortal Kombat reboot only hinting at the threat posed by Outworld, her introduction likely indicates a much greater exploration of the otherworldly realm.

Moreover, while Mortal Kombat 2’s cast roster has grown exponentially since the first movie, most of the sequel’s new characters bear some kind of direct relationship to Rudolph’s Kitana. From Gabrielle’s Jade serving as her loyal bodyguard, to the appearance of her biological parents Sindel and Jerrod, the movie’s casting would suggest that the details of Kitana’s tragic origin and ultimate betrayal of her adopted father and liege lord will likely become one of Mortal Kombat 2’s main storylines.

While many established fans are eager to see what Urban does with his version of Johnny Cage, Boon’s latest tease would suggest that they should probably be paying closer attention to Rudolph’s introduction to the franchise instead. As one of the most important characters in the original source material, her forthcoming appearance in Mortal Kombat 2 will likely see the story become far more complex and intriguing than what was first introduced in 2021’s Mortal Kombat and its emphasis on Scorpion’s bloodline.
