This Fall, the Creature Commandos will make their triumphant return to the DC Universe, and they kick it off in style with a jaw-dropping variant cover from the legendary Jim Lee. The Commandos’ new title will be part of the DC Horror imprint, and is being released to coincide with their animated debut later this year, and Jim Lee lends his talents to give them a five-star sendoff.
Jim Lee unveiled the cover, along with concept and work-in-progress sketches, on his Instagram account. Lee stated Creature Commandos would be written by David Dastmalchain and drawn by Jesus Hervas. Lee went on to say that while the book will be arriving in shops around the time the animated series begins to air, it stands alone. Lee’s cover is nothing short of breathtaking, depicting the Creature Commandos with their backs up against the wall.
Lee joked that the mission depicted on the cover “just went FUBAR.”
The Creature Commandos Are An Unlikely DC Success Story
The Creature Commandos Are Now Integral to DC's Future
DC’s stable of war characters runs deep, and the Creature Commandos stand as the most unique. Created by JM DeMatteis and Pat Broderick, the Commandos were an elite unit of soldiers, all with “monster” gimmicks. One resembled a vampire, another a Gorgon and still another was a werewolf. Running in Weird War Tales in the early 1980s, the Commandos have been a cult favorite since. Their forthcoming animated series will be the opening salvo in James Gunn’s new slate of DC films.
When the show was announced, DC’s Creature Commandos trade sold out, introducing the group to a new generation.
With the Creature Commandos kicking off a new era for DC movies and television, it makes sense the publisher would want A-list talent on the book, and it gets none more so than Jim Lee. The President, Publisher and Chief Creative Officer for DC, Lee, is legendary for his dynamic art. Lee has been central to some of comics’ greatest runs, such as X-Men with Chris Claremont and Batman with Jeph Loeb. Lee’s administrative duties keep him busy, but he still provides amazing covers for his company’s titles.
Jim Lee Makes the Creature Commandos Even Cooler
It Is Also an Enormous Vote of Confidence on DC's Part
And, on the eve of their mainstream breakthrough, the Creature Commandos are getting a variant cover by Jim Lee. In addition to his administrative duties, Lee happens to be one of the publisher’s top artists as well. It could also be argued Lee is one of the finest artists American comics have ever seen. The Creature Commandos have a lot riding on their debut this December. An artist of Jim Lee’s caliber taking on a relatively unknown property like the Creature Commandos is a vote of confidence on the part of DC Comics.
