Jack Nicholson and Keanu Reeves' Oscar-nominated comedy Something's Gotta Give is now streaming on Max. Even though Nicholson has not officially announced his retirement from professional acting, the 3-time Oscar winner (As Good as It Gets, Terms of Endearment, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) has not appeared in a movie since 2010's How Do You Know. On the other hand, Reeves' popularity somehow seems to have skyrocketed even more over the last decade with his massively successful John Wick franchise after The Matrix made him an international star in 1999. Something's Gotta Give is also available on HBO.

Nicholson is widely considered one of the greatest actors of the 20th century and will forever be a monolithic figure in Hollywood. Among his most celebrated films are One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Martin Scorsese's The Departed, Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, and Roman Polanski's Chinatown, which is currently in the process of being adapted into a prequel series on Netflix with David Fincher attached. Something's Gotta Give is the only feature film that stars both Reeves and Nicholson onscreen together. The film was initially released in theaters on December 12, 2003, and received mostly positive reviews from critics.

Something's Gotta Give Is Now On Max - What It's About & Who Is In It

Reeves and Nicholson star alongside Oscar-winner Diane Keaton

Reeves and Nicholson star alongside Frances McDormand (Nomadland), Jon Favreau (Iron Man), Amanda Peet (The Whole Nine Yards), and Diane Keaton (Annie Hall). Despite Nicholson and Reeves giving great performances, Keaton was the only actor in Something's Gotta Give that was nominated for an Academy Award. Keaton won Best Actress for her performance as Erica Barry, the love interest of Nicholson's playboy protagonist Harry Sanborn. The film follows a 63-year-old swinger named Harry who surprisingly chooses to become romantically involved with Keaton's Erica, a charming woman his age.

Something's Gotta Give is written and directed by Nancy Meyers, who has a string of popular mature romantic comedies such as It's Complicated starring Alec Baldwin and Meryl Streep, The Holiday starring Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Cameron Diaz, and What Woman Want starring Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt. Meyers made her directorial debut with The Parent Trap in 1998 starring an up-and-coming Lindsay Lohan. Those who have seen any of these films will know what to expect from Something's Gotta Give, which delivers plenty of romantic intrigue, clever dialogue, and compelling interpersonal tension.

Something's Gotta Give is certainly one of Nicholson's best movies in the 21st century. While that part of his filmography is much smaller compared to the rest of it, Something's Gotta Give still has one of his highlight performances of what could very well be the final slate of movies in his coveted career. His other notable 21st-century movies include About Schmidt (2002), The Bucket List (2007), and obviously, The Departed. Something's Gotta Give earned a Rotten Tomatoes critic score of 72% as well as a positive audience score of 69% and Metascore of 66.

Positive reviews of Something's Gotta Give praise the dynamic onscreen partnership of Keaton and Nicholson. Legendary film critic Roger Ebert wrote in his 3-and-a-half-star review of the film, "[Keaton and Nicholson] bring so much experience, knowledge and humor to their characters that the film works in ways the screenplay might not have even hoped for." Paul Clinton of CNN wrote in his Something's Gotta Give review, "Sharp, witty, and deep-down funny, Something's Gotta Give is one of the best adult romantic comedies of the year -- or the last few years, for that matter." Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote, "The moments between the characters are absolutely full. It's a pleasure to watch such consummate professionals."

Something's Gotta Give Shows Keanu Reeves Should Make More Rom-Coms

He plays an earnest younger love interest of Keaton's Erica

Even though Nicholson and Keaton naturally take up most of the spotlight in Something's Gotta Give, Keanu Reeves also delivers plenty of his seamless likability, charm, and even comedic value. The film is a great reminder that even though Reeves has been more-or-less pigeonholed into the action genre ever since The Matrix made him one of the most recognizable actors on the planet, he is a natural in old fashioned feel-good rom-coms. Reeves' most recent appearance in a romantic comedy was as himself in 2019's Always Be My Maybe but his performance as the good-natured Julian in Something's Gotta Give shows just how great he can be in a modern rom-com.
