8 Below Deck Franchise Alums Whose Poor Performance Hurt Their Reputation On The Show

Summary Crew members on Below Deck must be skilled and willing to learn, as poor performances can impact their reputation.

Excuses for poor performance are common, but taking ownership of mistakes is key to improving on the show.

Memorable yachties on Below Deck are often those who make big mistakes and struggle with their tasks.

Below Deck has been bringing different crew members onto the various shows in the franchise for years, but some crew members' poor performances have hurt their reputations and kept them away from returning. While Below Deck and its various spin-offs have been known for their high level of drama, the work being done on the superyacht is legitimate and the crew members have to be trained to do their jobs. While most yachties wind up making mistakes during their time on Below Deck, some poor performances are too bad to be ignored.

Throughout the Below Deck franchise, there have been crew members who struggle to acclimate to the vessel they’re working on. Whether it be because of the conditions surrounding them, their training, or the rest of the crew on the ship, it’s common that crew members struggle, especially in the earlier seasons of their participation. Below Deck crew members often try to make excuses for their poor performances rather than simply owning the fact that they need to learn more.

One of the interesting things about the Below Deck franchise is that the cast members shuffle around quite a bit. Whether it’s crew members who wind up going from one Below Deck show to another in the franchise, or Below Deck crew members who appear in one season and then don’t appear again for years, there’s a lot of variety in who shows up. Below Deck viewers remembering those yachties who have had difficult charter seasons is easy. It’s more common for yachties who make big mistakes to become memorable, especially with how they handle their poor performance.

Though some Below Deck crew members can pull their weight aboard their vessel, keeping their standing with their team lead and captain, others have a hard time ensuring that they keep their heads above water. While poor performances aren’t always the crew members’ fault, it reflects poorly on them to consistently struggle without asking for help. Many of the crew members who have been remembered for their poor performances aboard Below Deck vessels are memorable because of the circumstances surrounding their poor performance.

Most Below Deck yachties are often known for their quips during their interviews or their work ethic aboard their show’s vessel, but those who have had poor performances are typically memorable because of how badly they did during the charter season. While some have been fired by their Captains, others were able to make it through charter season by the skin of their teeth. Generally, Below Deck cast members with poor performances are known throughout the community, whether for good reasons or bad, and are still discussed today.

8 Hindrigo "Kiko" Lorran

Below Deck Mediterranean Season 5

Close

Chef Hindrigo “Kiko” Lorran worked aboard The Wellington on Below Deck Mediterranean season 5, and his poor performance earned her a bad reputation across the franchise. A polarizing figure in the Below Deck community, Kiko is beloved by some viewers and loathed by others. His performance on Below Deck Mediterranean season 5 was difficult for some, especially Captain Sandy Yawn, who took every opportunity she had to tear him down. While Kiko was talented, his cooking style was the heart of the problem with his performance.

Kiko struggled to make meals that fit the charter guests' preferences, as he was a Brazilian chef who had a distinct style of cooking. Regardless, Kiko was able to work well in moments where he was able to be creative with the meals he was serving. Struggling more often than not, Kiko was let go by Captain Sandy after the first half of the charter season and an abundance of chances.

7 Jared Woodin

Below Deck Season 11

Close

Although Below Deck season 11 brought about a large group of new yachties, including Captain Kerry Titheradge, to the series, it as one of the most interesting seasons of the series in years. With the absence of Captain Lee Rosbach looming heavy over the season prior to its premiere, it felt like the yachties aboard St. David would have to be an immaculate source of entertainment to keep the series afloat. Jared Woodin, the new Bosun aboard the vessel, didn’t disappoint.

Jared was new to the size of superyacht that St. David was, having worked with smaller vessels in the past, which he attributed to the mistakes he was making throughout the earliest moments of the season. Scatter-brained, Jared often gave the Captain the wrong instructions and made some dangerous mistakes, narrowly avoiding hitting the dock. After Jared’s antics with the rest of the crew while drinking left them uncomfortable, he was let go from the superyacht early in the charter season.

6 Elena "Ellie" Dubaich

Below Deck Mediterranean Season 9

Close

Though Below Deck Mediterranean season 9 isn’t her first appearance in the franchise, Elena “Ellie” Dubaich has been making her mark on the Below Deck franchise in the current season. Ellie’s time on the franchise began when she worked as a replacement stew on Below Deck Mediterranean season 7 for the end of the charter, but her time on the current season has given her more context. Joining in on the charter season hopeful that she’d gain the experience needed to become a Chief Stew, Ellie has a strong work ethic but struggles with others.

Embroiled in a feud with her Third Stew Bri Muller, Ellie has been trying to assert her dominance over Bri throughout the charter season. With some lingering hurt feelings because Bri hooked up with her potential boatmance, Deckhand Joe Bradley, Ellie has done everything possible to show Bri she’s wrong throughout the charter season. Rather than relying on her professionalism, Ellie has been indulging in poor behavior that has left her performance lacking, with tasks falling to the wayside in favor of making Bri look bad.

5 Bri Muller

Below Deck Mediterranean Season 9

Although Bri’s time on Below Deck Mediterranean season 9 has been plagued by Ellie lording her dominance over her head, the Third Stew hasn’t been working up to the Mustique standard, either. Bri, who only has three years of experience in the yachting industry, admitted early on in the charter season that she’s never completed a charter season successfully. Regardless of her struggles with Ellie, Bri’s skills have been far below the standard for her role.

Bri has been having a tough time with laundry throughout the charter season, to the point that it’s almost laughable how frustratingly poor she is in keeping track of the crew and charter guests’ clothes. Trying to set up a system for herself, Bri has been logging information about the laundry in a notebook that has come back to bite her, after Chief Stew Aesha Scott found it and confused it with a burn book of sorts. While Bri’s capabilities have been called into question, her immature attitude is likely what she’ll be remembered for.

4 Johnathan Shillingford

Below Deck Mediterranean Season 9

Another member of the Below Deck Mediterranean season 9 cast who has been struggling with their performance is Chef Johnathan Shillingford, who struggled early on in the charter season. Johnathan, who goes by Chef Jono to the rest of the crew, may be capable when it comes to some styles of cooking, but taking feedback isn’t his forte. Throughout the first charters of the season, Jono got feedback about his meals from guests and Captain Sandy herself, but struggled to improve.

While there has been some improvement during the second stretch of the season, Jono’s poor behavior wasn’t limited to the galley. During the early charters of the season, he had some issues with Ellie when she tried to wake him up to help with some guests’ requests for late-night snacks. Jono refused to wake up and help in the galley, telling Captain Sandy that he’d been interrupted and getting Ellie called out in front of the rest of the crew for a fairly standard practice. Jono’s attitude has been tough to deal with on Below Deck Med season 9.

3 Iain Maclean

Below Deck Mediterranean Season 9

Close

Although Bosun Iain MacLean is the most likely candidate to be fired on Below Deck Mediterranean season 9, he’ll be more remembered for his poor performance than his actual firing should it come to pass. Iain, who has several years' worth of experience in the yachting industry, came to Mustique ready to work with Captain Sandy, but has proven he lacks the necessary experience. Iain’s time as the Bosun has been dangerous for the guests and the crew, pushing Captain Sandy to her limits.

After a disastrous first charter that was missing provisions but saw the exterior team doing well, things have been impossible for Iain to deal with. Whether it’s dangerous mistakes being made because of his lack of consideration when he makes calls to the rest of his team or the wrong choice of a Lead Deckhand, Iain has made mistakes throughout Below Deck Med season 9. While he understands he’s under fire, Iain doesn’t appear to realize he’s been making errors aboard Mustique, which makes him one of the most irritating cast members to watch.

2 Mathew Shea

Below Deck Mediterranean Season 6

Close

Below Deck Mediterranean season 6’s Chef Matthew Shea is one of the most difficult people Captain Sandy has ever worked with, and watching him during the charter season, it’s clear as to why. While Matthew was a decent chef, his inability to stay stable and work consistently throughout the season was tough for the rest of the crew to deal with. Matthew walked away from Lady Michelle more than once during the season, sometimes for valid reasons and sometimes for ridiculous ones.

Matthew had some incredibly tense moments with the rest of Lady Michelle’s crew, which proved too much for anyone on the superyacht to handle. While Captain Sandy did her best to mediate between the chef and the rest of the crew, she ultimately had enough of Matthew’s behavior. Though he’s called her one of the worst Captains he’s ever worked with professionally, Matthew was just as tough for the Captain and crew to handle.

1 Anthony Iracane

Below Deck Season 11

Close

Below Deck season 11’s Chef Anthony Iracane seemed like a wonderful person, so his poor performance was difficult to watch as it grew worse and worse throughout the charter season. Chef Anthony struggled with his own disability, explaining that his dyslexia made it difficult for him to keep himself organized in the galley and read through charter guests’ preferences quickly. Though he began the season working wonderfully with the rest of the crew, Anthony’s downward spiral was a quick one.

Anthony’s performance in the galley went from bad to worse as he worked through the charter season and began to get frustrated with the mistakes he was making day after day. Though the rest of the crew wanted Anthony to be successful on the charter, he didn’t get much help from the interior team throughout the season. When Anthony’s dishes began to cost the crew tips and get complaints from Below Deck charter guests, Captain Kerry had to let him go.
