Joshua Jackson's New Show Sounds Like The 9-1-1 Follow-Up I Didn't Know I Needed
Summary Joshua Jackson stars in Ryan Murphy's new medical show Doctor Odyssey.
Doctor Odyssey takes place on a luxury cruise ship.
The upcoming show draws from the thrilling 9-1-1 season 7 cruise storyline, creating anticipation for its debut.
Following in the footsteps of 9-1-1, Ryan Murphy is creating a new TV show for ABC starring Joshua Jackson, and its premise sounds quite familiar to one of my favorite recent 9-1-1 storylines. The procedural drama series, created by Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, premiered on Fox in January 2018, and even though Fox canceled 9-1-1 before season 7, ABC picked up the show, allowing season 7 to air on its network. 9-1-1 season 7 debuted in March 2024 and was ultimately a success as ABC swiftly renewed it for an eighth season.
9-1-1 season 8 will return to the show's normal episode count, with 18 expected and the premiere scheduled for September 26, 2024.
In its first season on ABC, 9-1-1 impressively became the network's highest-rated show, surpassing popular TV shows such as Abbott Elementary, Grey's Anatomy, and The Rookie. So, it's unsurprising that ABC would want to continue working with Murphy, who has already established himself as a renowned TV producer (and writer and director). However, 9-1-1 is Murphy's first ABC series, and he will soon follow it up with another procedural drama that seemingly continues one thrilling 9-1-1 season 7 storyline.

Joshua Jackson Stars In Ryan Murphy's New Medical Show Based On A Cruise Ship
Jackson Plays A Doctor On A Cruise Ship
Doctor Odyssey, produced by Ryan Murphy and starring Joshua Jackson, is set to debut on September 26, 2024, directly following 9-1-1's season 8 premiere. The upcoming medical drama series features Jackson as Max, a doctor working on a cruise ship. The Doctor Odyssey trailer shows a first look at Jackson's character, the luxury cruise ship's new doctor, whose job is to "keep everybody alive." Unfortunately, the video is rather short, so not much else is known about Murphy's new series. However, according to TVLine, Doctor Odyssey's synopsis reads:
"[Doctor Odyssey follows Joshua Jackson's character on a cruise ship] where the staff works hard and plays harder. It's all hands on deck as Max and his small but mighty medical team navigate unique medical crises and each other, miles from shore."
Jackson also told TVLine that Doctor Odyssey is "Ryan Murphy at his outrageous, over-the-top best. [The scripts] are written with a lot of joy, and they're very funny, and they move very fast." Aside from Jackson, other cast members include Don Johnson, Sean Teale, and Phillipa Soo. Their characters are unknown, but they all come together to save those in trouble on the luxury cruise ship, similar to 9-1-1 season 7's first few episodes.

Doctor Odyssey Sounds Perfect After 9-1-1 Season 7
9-1-1 Season 7's Cruise Storyline Was Enthralling
Close
9-1-1 season 7 kicked off with, what I believe was, one of the procedural drama's best multi-episode events. The first handful of 9-1-1 season 7 episodes featured Bobby and Athena taking a vacation on a cruise ship that pirates took over at the premiere's end. This tense and gripping storyline was so massive that the writers stretched it out over three episodes, and it was one of their best decisions. The cruise ship setting and high stakes were fun to watch, and these elements will be a part of Doctor Odyssey's structure, making it the perfect follow-up after 9-1-1 season 7.
