Secret Lair has become a big part of the Magic: The Gathering brand over the past several years, and yet another interesting Secret Lair release is coming with the Dungeons & Dragons 50th Anniversary celebration. Focusing on the collectible aspect of MTG, Secret Lair releases products in limited drops that feature unique artwork with interesting brand and artist collaborations. The limited aspect has proved to be a source of frustration for some fans, but there's no denying that the best Secret Lair releases are great for those who can get their hands on them.

Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons are no stranger to collaborations, as both product lines have been owned by MTG publisher Wizards of the Coast since the 1990s. Previous efforts have seen crossovers in both directions, with DnD receiving some sourcebooks that incorporate MTG lore and concepts into tabletop play. MTG released DnD cards in the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms and Battle for Baldur's Gate lines in recent years, and Secret Lair released a drop to tie in with the 2023 film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

What To Expect From MTG's Secret Lair D&D Drops

Baldur's Gate 3 Gets Some Major Representation

Close

Despite tying in with DnD's 50th anniversary, the Secret Lair Superdrop puts an emphasis on Baldur's Gate 3 in particular, with Astarion's Thirst and Karlach's Rage being themed after two popular party members from the game. The Battle for Baldur's Gate cards featured some tie-in elements with the then-upcoming game, and the two cards revealed so far for the Secret Lair release, courtesy of the official MTG Secret Lair Twitter account, are new versions of Battle for Baldur's Gate cards.

Although MTG's original depiction of the vampiric rogue Astarion was similar to his appearance in-game, the tiefling barbarian Karlach was still undergoing major design revisions when Battle for Baldur's Gate released. The new Secret Lair art brings her MTG appearance much closer to the Baldur's Gate 3 version.

Related How To Tell Magic: The Gathering Card Rarity By observing a few key details and understanding their meaning, it is easy to discern the rarity of any given Magic: The Gathering card.

As for the beholder sets, the iconic DnD monster has previously featured in MTG cards like Eyes of the Beholder and Baleful Beholder. Cards like Xanathar, Guild Kingpin and Karazikar, the Eye Tyrant also depicted specific beholders from DnD lore. These many-eyed creatures have instilled nightmarish memories in many DnD parties thanks to their strategic minds and varied attacks, so it's no surprise that they would be the monsters to make the cut.

For those who aren't as into the collectible aspect, buying some old Adventures in the Forgotten Realms and Battle for Baldur's Gate packs is still a good way to pick up cards for play. Anyone on the fence about the Secret Lair release can look forward to seeing the other cards revealed in the future, especially when it comes to An Exhibition of Adventure, which remains more mysterious than the other drops at the moment. In any scenario, the Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons 50th Anniversary Superdrop should provide some nice Magic: The Gathering eye candy for DnD fans.
