The High Republic’s Greatest Hero Is A Stone Cold Badass

Summary Geode, a Vintian, is a unique and mysterious sentient rock that navigates a ship in the High Republic era of Star Wars.

The Vintians, including Geode, have a mysterious connection to the Force and are among the most enigmatic species in the franchise.

Despite looking like a rock, Geode is a lively character engaging in misadventures and parties.

The High Republic era of Star Wars is filled with strange, new, and interesting concepts and characters, but one of the most eccentric was truly stone-cold. The High Republic era of the Star Wars timeline has gotten quite a bit more attention of late. The Acolyte brought the High Republic into live-action, and it introduced a whole new audience to a time when the Jedi Order dominated the galaxy. One of the main themes of the High Republic, however, is that everything is not always what it appears to be, and that's doubly true for one of its best characters.

The High Republic is far from ordinary. Whether it be sentient plants like the drengir or creatures that can destroy the Force itself like the Nameless, there are plenty of unique and intriguing concepts in the High Republic. Both the drengir and the Nameless are clear antagonists of the High Republic, though, and there's one heroic character who is even more interesting. From his mysterious powers and species to his wild antics and seemingly magical ability to save the day at the last moment, he's quite a character.

Geode Is A Sentient Rock That Served As A Ship’s Navigator

Claudia Gray's "Star Wars: The High Republic: Into the Dark" followed a group of Jedi who chartered a merchant ship called the Vessel. The Vessel was an unusual ship, but one of its most odd features was its navigator: a sentient rock named Geode. Technically, however, Geode was a nickname, as the pilot of the Vessel, Leox Gyasi, explained that Geode's real name couldn't be pronounced by any species that had a mouth. The Jedi aboard the Vessel - Reath Silas, Cohmac Vitus, Orla Jareni, and Dez Rydan - thought Leox was playing a prank on them, but there was much more to Geode than a mere prank.

Leox Gyasi once described Geode as incredibly sensitve, saying, "his is a capricious nature, one of many moods and climes."

Throughout Into the Dark, Geode became a very valuable member of the ship. Shortly after the Vessel departed, the Great Hyperspace Disaster began. When the Legacy Run broke apart in hyperspace in "Light of the Jedi," it forced the Vessel to drop out of hyperspace very quickly. Geode picked coordinates that not only kept the ship and its passengers safe, but also ones that led them to the Amaxine station, and therefore the rest of the novel. By the end of the book, Geode had even saved Reath's life by preventing him from being blown into open space, proving he was quite heroic for a rock.

Geode Is A Vintian, One Of The High Republic’s Most Mysterious Species

After the Jedi learned for themselves that Geode was not, in fact, just a rock, Star Wars revealed a bit more about him. Geode was a Vintian, a species that hailed from the planet Vint and had bodies that made them appear to be rocks. While there is a bit known about Vintians through Geode, the species remains one of the biggest mysteries in the High Republic. Much of the mystery surrounding Geode comes from how he moves around. Geode moved several times throughout Into the Dark, but none of the Jedi ever saw how he did it, and the novel never fully explained it.

Claudia Gray's one-shot comic, "No Stone Unturned," seemed to imply that Geode could not only move quickly, he could move much more rapidly than most other life forms. It's possible that Geode used teleportation or the same short-distance hyperspace jumps that the Nihil are known for, but again, it remains a mystery. Vintians also seem to have some deep connection to both the Force and the origins of the Star Wars galaxy. In addition to Geode's odd movement style, he was also able to deflect blaster bolts somehow, which only adds to his mystique.

On top of the mysteries surrounding Vintians, they're also unusual for Star Wars in general. Most of the alien species that appear in the High Republic as main characters have a long history in the franchise. Leslye Headland famously dug into Star Wars Legends for alien species like the Theelin Jedi Padawan Jecki Lon and others. Even though they were obscure, they weren't new. Vintians, however, are an entirely novel creation, and as such have very little information surrounding them. They're not the first rock-like species in Star Wars, but they are among the most mysterious.

Vintians May Look Like Rocks, But Geode Wasn’t Dull

Geode's species may have been relatively unknown, but there's far more concrete information about him as an individual. He, Leox Gyasi, and eventually Affie Hollow got into more than a few misadventures over the years. Leox mentioned that he and Geode had briefly become gods to a primitive world on a mission to deliver some idols, and all three of them nearly ruined and subsequently saved another world's festival. Geode and his friends also got into much more than misadventures, though, as they were all present for both the discovery of the Drengir and the fall of the Starlight Beacon.

While Geode was an important part of the Vessel's crew, he also had a life outside of work. When the crew had time for a break on Coruscant, Leox and Affie mentioned that Geode was partying at the city planet's clubs while he had the chance. Leox also made passing references to Geode's "mating smelts," and Geode was even known to flirt with married women, like Pikka Adren. Though he was a party animal, Geode was also a very caring friend. He was the first person Affie trusted during her time mentoring on ships, and he often offered both her and Leox a shoulder to cry on.

Geode is hardly the strangest part of Star Wars lore that has come out of the High Republic so far, but he's very near the top of that list. He actually caused a bit of controversy on social media when he was introduced back in 2021, with some not seeing the whimsy of a sentient rock. While he certainly doesn't work for everyone, Claudia Gray has created a truly unique character, and he was a valuable avenue for comedic relief in Into the Dark. Geode is one of the most innovative parts of the High Republic of Star Wars, and he truly is a stone-cold badass.
