I Know Who Should Play Lucius Malfoy In HBO's Harry Potter Remake
Summary Recasting iconic Harry Potter characters, like Lucius Malfoy, will be a major challenge for the upcoming HBO TV series.
Ewan Mitchell, who plays Aemond Targaryen in House of the Dragon, has the look and villainous charm to potentially take on the role.
Mitchell's experience with adapted characters and his potential availability after finishing House of the Dragon could make him a perfect fit.
HBO's Harry Potter TV show hasn't begun casting yet, but I know who should play Lucius Malfoy in the upcoming remake. The prospect of HBO's Harry Potter TV series is exciting, but recasting the characters will be one of the biggest challenges it must overcome. The cast of the Harry Potter movies is iconic, and many of the actors have become synonymous with their roles. The new adaptation will need to find standout stars if it hopes to compare to the films.
The Golden Trio will probably be the most difficult for the Harry Potter TV show to recast, though actors like Alan Rickman and Robbie Coltrane will also be tough to follow. I'm not sure who can replace them in HBO's remake, but I do have an idea of who can play Lucius Malfoy. Although Jason Isaacs is iconic in the role, I think one House of the Dragon star has proven he can take on the Harry Potter villain.

House Of The Dragon's Ewan Mitchell Should Play Lucius Malfoy In The Harry Potter Show
The Aemond Targaryen Actor Can Capture Lucius Malfoy's Look

If anyone can follow Isaacs' performance as Lucius Malfoy, I think it's House of the Dragon's Ewan Mitchell. Mitchell portrays Aemond Targaryen in the Game of Thrones prequel, and he very much looks the part. The platinum Targaryen wig suits him, and it also proves he can pass as the Malfoy family patriarch in the Harry Potter TV show. Isaacs took on a similar look when playing the character, and every time I see Mitchell as Aemond Targaryen, I can't help but note the resemblance.
Mitchell has proven he can handle a role like Lucius Malfoy through his standout House of the Dragon performance.
Mitchell might be a bit young to take on the role of Lucius Malfoy currently, but that may not be the case by the time the HBO series starts filming. And as Harry Potter's story will likely unfold over at least seven seasons, Mitchell can grow into the part as the adaptation continues. Lucius is in his late 30s and early 40s during the Harry Potter books, so it won't be that huge of a jump. And Mitchell has proven he can handle a role like Lucius Malfoy through his standout House of the Dragon performance.
Why I Think Ewan Mitchell Would Nail The Role Of Lucius Malfoy
Aemond Targaryen & Lucius Malfoy Are Both Intimidating Villains
Close
House of the Dragon proves Mitchell can nail Lucius Malfoy's appearance, but it also showcases the actor's strength as a villain. Both Lucius and Aemond are intimidating foes, and the fact that Mitchell portrays the latter so convincingly has me sold on him as a Harry Potter villain. Lucius is conniving and cold, even to his own family — and Mitchell has experience bringing such qualities to life thanks to his time as Aemond Targaryen. He can also be fearsome and charming, two attributes Lucius can wield when he needs to.
In addition to proving he can get Lucius' appearance and personality right, Mitchell also boasts experience working with adapted characters. Aemond is pulled from the pages of George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood, though he requires additional characterization, as it reads a bit like a historical text. But if Mitchell can draw such an impressive interpretation of Aemond from Fire & Blood, he can surely bring Lucius Malfoy to life. The Harry Potter villain is thoroughly described in the source material, and Isaacs' portrayal offers additional inspiration.
HBO's Harry Potter Remake Is The Perfect Follow-Up To House Of The Dragon
The Two Series' Could Align Perfectly For Ewan Mitchell

HBO's Harry Potter remake would make the perfect follow-up project for Ewan Mitchell, as it isn't likely to premiere until House of the Dragon is nearly finished. House of the Dragon season 4 will be the final outing, and as it's part of the Game of Thrones franchise, it's possible Aemond won't even live to see the series finale. As Lucius Malfoy shouldn't appear until Harry Potter season 2, the timing could align for the actor to jump from one adaptation to the other.
As Lucius Malfoy shouldn't appear until Harry Potter season 2, the timing could align for the actor to jump from one adaptation to the other.
The fact that Mitchell is already proving a successful star in a major HBO adaptation could also help land him the role. His connection to the network might spur HBO to try to keep him around, even if it's outside House of the Dragon. The Harry Potter remake is the perfect way for Mitchell and the network to continue working together. It would promise a lengthy collaboration, too, as Warner Bros. has said it will be a "decade-long series" (via TV Guide). It's a long commitment, but another high-profile project could catapult Mitchell to even greater fame.
